  • บาท bàat

    baht (Thai currency) noun

    The number comes first, then บาทbàat: ห้าสิบบาทhâa sìp bàat, 50 baht.

    • น้ำ náamสิบ sìpบาท bàat

      The water is 10 baht.

    • ชา chaaเย็น yenสาม sǎamสิบ sìpบาท bàat

      Thai iced tea is 30 baht.

  • เท่าไหร่ tâo-rài

    how much question word

    The dictionary spelling is เท่าไรtâo-rai, but people say เท่าไหร่tâo-rài and usually write it that way too.

    • กาแฟ gaa-faeเท่าไหร่ tâo-ràiครับ kráp

      How much is the coffee?

  • ทั้งหมด táng-mòt

    all, altogether, in total adverb

    • ทั้งหมด táng-mòtเท่าไหร่ tâo-ràiครับ kráp

      How much is it altogether?

      Men ทั้งหมดเท่าไหร่ครับ Women ทั้งหมดเท่าไหร่คะ

    • ทั้งหมด táng-mòtร้อย ráwyบาท bàat

      100 baht altogether.

  • อันนี้ an níi

    this one pronoun

    Point and say it: you don't need to know what the thing is called.

    • อันนี้ an níiเท่าไหร่ tâo-ràiครับ kráp

      How much is this one?

      Men อันนี้เท่าไหร่ครับ Women อันนี้เท่าไหร่คะ

    • อันนี้ an níiอร่อย à-ràwyไหม mǎi

      Is this one good?

  • ขนม kà-nǒm

    snack; sweets, dessert noun

    Anything from crisps to traditional Thai sweets, ขนมไทยkà-nǒm tai.

    • ขนม kà-nǒmไทย taiหวาน wǎanมาก mâak

      Thai sweets are very sweet.

    • ชอบ châwpขนม kà-nǒmไทย tai

      I like Thai sweets.

  • เงิน ngoen

    money noun

    In casual speech Thais often say ตังค์dtang instead.

    • ไม่ mâiมี miiเงิน ngoen

      I don't have any money.

  • เงินสด ngoen-sòt

    cash noun

    • จ่าย jàaiเงินสด ngoen-sòt

      I'll pay cash.

    • มี miiเงินสด ngoen-sòtไหม mǎi

      Do you have cash?

  • บัตร bàt

    card noun

    Any card: a bank card, an ID card, your BTS card.

    • บัตร bàtได้ dâiไหม mǎiครับ kráp

      Can I use a card?

  • สแกน sà-gaen

    to scan (a QR code to pay) verb

    From English scan: at a Thai counter it means paying with a QR code.

    • สแกน sà-gaenได้ dâiไหม mǎiครับ kráp

      Can I pay by QR code?

      Men สแกนได้ไหมครับ Women สแกนได้ไหมคะ

  • จ่าย jàai

    to pay verb

    There's no word for by or with: just add how you pay.

    • จ่าย jàaiบัตร bàt

      I'll pay by card.

  • ได้ dâi

    can; okay, possible verb

    Answer ได้ไหมdâi mǎi with ได้dâi (yes) or ไม่ได้mâi dâi (no).

    • ได้ dâiไหม mǎiครับ kráp

      Is that okay?

      Men ได้ไหมครับ Women ได้ไหมคะ

    • ไม่ mâiได้ dâi

      No, you can't.

  • รับ ráp

    to receive, to take; 'would you like…' (staff) verb

    Staff use it to offer things: รับอะไรดีráp à-rai dii means What can I get you?

    • รับ rápถุง tǔngไหม mǎi

      Would you like a bag?

    • รับ rápบัตร bàtไหม mǎiครับ kráp

      Do you take cards?

      Men รับบัตรไหมครับ Women รับบัตรไหมคะ

  • ถุง tǔng

    bag noun

    Big chains stopped handing out plastic bags automatically in 2020, so cashiers ask first.

    • ไม่ mâiรับ rápถุง tǔng

      No bag, thanks.

    • มี miiถุง tǔngไหม mǎiครับ kráp

      Do you have a bag?

      Men มีถุงไหมครับ Women มีถุงไหมคะ
