Unit 2 · Lesson 3 · Pattern

I am, my name is, I'm from

One grammar pattern, explained with examples you can hear. Read it here, then try the drills in the app.

How it works

ชื่อchûue + name gives your name, มาจากmaa jàak + place says where you're from, and เป็นคนbpen kon + country gives your nationality.

1 Your name

ชื่อchûue means 'name', and it's also the verb 'to be called'. Say it, then the name. To ask, use ชื่ออะไรchûue à-rai, literally 'called what?'.

Thai question words sit where the answer goes, so อะไรà-rai comes at the end, right where the name would be. Our sample learner is called Alex: put in your own name.

  • ผม pǒmชื่อ chûueอเล็กซ์ à-lékครับ kráp

    My name is Alex.

    Men ผมชื่ออเล็กซ์ครับ Women ฉันชื่ออเล็กซ์ค่ะ

  • คุณ kunชื่อ chûueอะไร à-raiครับ kráp

    What's your name?

    Men คุณชื่ออะไรครับ Women คุณชื่ออะไรคะ

2 Where you're from

มาจากmaa jàak means 'come from': the place goes after it. To ask, put ไหนnǎi ('where') in that same spot, or ask about the country with ประเทศอะไรbprà-têet à-rai.

  • มาจาก maa jàakไหน nǎiครับ kráp

    Where are you from?

    Men มาจากไหนครับ Women มาจากไหนคะ

  • ผม pǒmมาจาก maa jàakอังกฤษ ang-grìtครับ kráp

    I'm from England.

    Men ผมมาจากอังกฤษครับ Women ฉันมาจากอังกฤษค่ะ

3 Your nationality

For a nationality, say เป็นคนbpen kon ('am a person of') and the country: เป็นคนไทยbpen kon tai, เป็นคนอังกฤษbpen kon ang-grìt. To say what you're not, use ไม่ใช่mâi châi instead: ไม่ใช่คนไทยmâi châi kon tai.

เป็นbpen is only for who or what someone is, like a nationality or a job. Adjectives don't need it: 'I'm fine' is just สบายดีsà-baai dii.

  • ผม pǒmเป็น bpenคน konอังกฤษ ang-grìtครับ kráp

    I'm English.

    Men ผมเป็นคนอังกฤษครับ Women ฉันเป็นคนอังกฤษค่ะ

  • ผม pǒmไม่ใช่ mâi châiคน konอเมริกัน à-mee-rí-ganครับ kráp

    I'm not American.

    Men ผมไม่ใช่คนอเมริกันครับ Women ฉันไม่ใช่คนอเมริกันค่ะ

4 I, you, he, she, we… or nothing at all

Thai drops pronouns whenever it's clear who you mean, so ชื่ออะไรchûue à-rai and มาจากไหนmaa jàak nǎi work on their own. The app fills in your own word for 'I': it sounds natural when you introduce yourself, and most other times you can leave it out.

People also use names instead of 'I' and 'you'. Nam talks about herself as น้ำnáam, and you can call her น้ำnáam or, more politely, คุณน้ำkun náam.

  • ชื่อ chûueอะไร à-raiครับ kráp

    What's your name?

    Men ชื่ออะไรครับ Women ชื่ออะไรคะ

  • เขา kǎoมาจาก maa jàakไหน nǎiครับ kráp

    Where's he from?

    Men เขามาจากไหนครับ Women เขามาจากไหนคะ

I, me (men)ผมpǒm
I, me (women)ฉันchǎn

we, usเราrao

Tips

  • •To answer, swap the question word for the answer: มาจากไหนmaa jàak nǎi → มาจากอังกฤษmaa jàak ang-grìt.
  • •Many Thais will guess you're American. ไม่ใช่mâi châi and your nationality sort it out with a smile.
