What the song is about
ไม่บอกเธอmâi bàwk toe, “I Won't Tell You (Mai Bok Ter)”, is a Thai indie song by Bedroom Audio (2012). A secret-crush love song that the teen series Hormones (2013) turned into a nationwide hit. A boy is head over heels but won't say a word, afraid it's too soon and that she'd walk away. Its lines are clear A2 Thai about feelings: want to, almost, when, too soon, good enough, and a heart that trembles.

- อยาก yàakขยับ kà-yàpเข้า kâoไป bpaiใกล้ glâiเธอ toe
I want to move in closer to you.
อยากyàak + verb = to want to: อยากไปyàak bpai = I want to go. ขยับkà-yàp = to move a little, to shift: ขยับหน่อยkà-yàp nàwy = scoot over a bit, on a crowded bench. เข้าkâo = to enter, and the verb after it gives the direction: เข้าไปkâo bpai = to go in, away from me (here, towards you); เข้ามาkâo maa = to come in, towards me. ใกล้glâi = near, close. - ใจ jaiฉัน chǎnสั่น sànเมื่อ mûeaได้ยิน dâi-yinเสียง sǐangเธอ toe
My heart trembles when I hear your voice.
สั่นsàn = to shake, to tremble: มือสั่นmuue sàn = shaky hands. เมื่อmûea = when, a little more formal than ตอนที่dtawn tîi, so songs love it. ได้ยินdâi-yin = to hear, and เสียงsǐang = a voice or a sound: ได้ยินเสียงเธอdâi-yin sǐang toe = to hear your voice. In speech and in songs, ฉันchǎn is often said with a high tone, chán. - เธอ toeหาย hǎaiไป bpaiก็ gâwห่วง hùangเธอ toeแทบ tâepตาย dtaai
When you're gone, I'm worried sick about you.
หายไปhǎai bpai = to disappear, to go missing (หายhǎai also means to get better: หายแล้วhǎai láew = I'm better now). ห่วงhùang = to worry about someone you care for; ไม่ต้องห่วงmâi dtâwng hùang = don't worry. แทบตายtâep dtaai, literally 'almost dying', is everyday exaggeration: เหนื่อยแทบตายnùeay tâep dtaai = dead tired. There's no word for 'when': the ก็gâw in the middle marks what follows. - เกือบ gùeapลืม luuemหายใจ hǎai-jaiเมื่อ mûeaเธอ toeเข้า kâoมา maaใกล้ๆ glâi-glâi
I almost forget to breathe when you come close.
เกือบgùeap = almost, nearly: เกือบลืมgùeap luuem = I almost forgot. หายใจhǎai-jai = to breathe; หายใจลึกๆhǎai-jai lúek-lúek = take a deep breath. เข้ามาใกล้ๆkâo maa glâi-glâi = to come close: doubling ใกล้glâi makes it softer and more vivid, 'nice and close'. - แต่ dtàeบอก bàwkตอนนี้ dtawn-níiไม่ mâiรู้ rúuจะ jàเร็ว rewไป bpaiหรือไม่ rǔue mâi
But if I tell you now, I don't know if it's too soon.
Adjective + ไปbpai = too…: เร็วไปrew bpai = too soon, too fast; แพงไปpaeng bpai = too expensive. Thai often leaves out 'if': บอกตอนนี้bàwk dtawn-níi alone means 'telling you now'. ไม่รู้mâi rúu… หรือไม่rǔue mâi = I don't know whether…; in conversation you'd say หรือเปล่าrǔue bplàao. - ดี diiพอ pawแล้ว láewที่ tîiได้ dâiมี miiเธอ toeอยู่ yùuใกล้ๆ glâi-glâi
It's good enough just to have you near.
The chorus begins. ดีพอแล้วdii paw láew = good enough already (พอแล้วpaw láew alone = that's enough). ที่tîi + a clause = (good) that…: ดีใจที่ได้เจอdii-jai tîi dâi joe = glad to have met you. ได้dâi before a verb = to get to: ได้มีเธออยู่ใกล้ๆdâi mii toe yùu glâi-glâi = to get to have you near. - จะ jàซ่อน sâwnความลับ kwaam-lápเอา aoไว้ wáiใน naiหัวใจ hǔa-jai
I'll hide the secret in my heart.
ซ่อนsâwn = to hide, with a falling tone (สอนsǎwn, rising, means to teach). ความลับkwaam-láp = a secret: ความkwaam + ลับláp (hidden). เอาไว้ao wái after a verb = and keep it there: เก็บเอาไว้gèp ao wái = to keep something. หัวใจhǔa-jai = the heart; in songs ใจjai and หัวใจhǔa-jai are the same heart. - ได้ยิน dâi-yinไหม mǎiว่า wâaรัก rákเธอ toeทั้ง tángหัวใจ hǔa-jai
Can you hear that I love you with all my heart?
The last line, when he finally says it. ได้ยินไหมdâi-yin mǎi = can you hear (me)?, a phrase you'll use on bad phone lines. ว่าwâa = that: ได้ยินไหมว่าdâi-yin mǎi wâa… = do you hear that… ทั้งtáng + noun = the whole, all of: ทั้งหัวใจtáng hǔa-jai = with all my heart, ทั้งวันtáng wan = all day.

Grammar in this song
Adjective + ไปbpai = too… เร็วไปrew bpai (too soon), แพงไปpaeng bpai (too expensive), เผ็ดไปpèt bpai (too spicy). It's one of the most useful things to say at a market or a restaurant.
เข้ามาkâo maa or เข้าไปkâo bpai? After a verb of movement, มาmaa points towards the speaker and ไปbpai away: เข้ามาใกล้ๆkâo maa glâi-glâi (come close to me), อยากขยับเข้าไปใกล้เธอyàak kà-yàp kâo bpai glâi toe (I want to move closer to you). The same works with กลับglàp, to return: กลับมาglàp maa (come back), กลับไปglàp bpai (go back).
เมื่อmûea = when. It joins two things that happen together: ใจฉันสั่นเมื่อได้ยินเสียงเธอjai chǎn sàn mûea dâi-yin sǐang toe. In everyday speech ตอนที่dtawn tîi or เวลาwee-laa are more common.
The culture behind it
"ไม่บอกเธอmâi bàwk toe" was written, composed and sung by Kawin "Mann" Sirinavin, the frontman of Bedroom Audio, a band that began, as the name says, with songs made in his bedroom. It came out at the start of 2012 with Crispy Sound, a group of independent musicians who shared their music on YouTube, and spent 19 weeks on Fat Radio's Fat 40 chart. A year later it became huge, when the teen series Hormones (2013) used it: in one episode the school band plays it on stage at the school fair. Apple named it the best-selling song of 2013 on the iTunes Store in Thailand.
Hormones, made by GTH and Nadao Bangkok and created by Songyos Sugmakanan, broke the mould of Thai TV: instead of a soap opera it showed teenage life at a Bangkok high school as it is, with first love, sex, sexuality and school violence, and the broadcasting regulator called its makers in to explain some of its scenes. The song fits its world perfectly. Not telling someone you like them, แอบรักàep rák (to love secretly), is a classic of Thai love songs, and its tone is very Thai: rather than risk an awkward moment and a loss of face for both, the singer keeps it to himself, ดีพอแล้วdii paw láew, until he's sure.
