What the song is about

กลัวว่าฉันจะไม่เสียใจglua wâa chǎn jà mâi sǐa-jai, “Fear (Afraid I Won't Be Sad)”, is a Thai indie song by PURPEECH (2025). The slow-burning hit by a five-piece indie band from Chiang Mai that has stayed in the Thai charts for a year and a half. Its fear is an unusual one: not of losing love, but of one day not even being sad about it. The lines are clear, slow and full of B1 patterns: by the time, afraid that, used to, still remember, the only one, and a final 'right?'.

Key lines, explained

Tap a line to hear it. Once the video is playing, lines jump to their moment in the song.

  1. กว่าจะ gwàa jàได้ dâiมา maaพบ pópมา maaเจอ joeต้อง dtâwngใช้ cháiเวลา wee-laaอีก ìikนาน naanเท่าไร tâo-rai

Before we finally get to meet, how much longer will it take?

Every line of the first verse begins with กว่าจะgwàa jà: by the time (something finally happens), before at last: กว่าจะถึงบ้านก็ดึกแล้วgwàa jà tǔeng bâan gâw dùek láew = by the time I got home, it was late. ได้dâi + verb = to get to do it: ได้มาพบมาเจอdâi maa póp maa joe = to get to meet (พบpóp and เจอjoe both mean 'meet', doubled for the rhythm). ต้องใช้เวลาdtâwng chái wee-laa = it takes time; อีกนานเท่าไรìik naan tâo-rai = how much longer?
  2. รัก rákที่ tîiมัน manดู duuเก่า gàoแต่ dtàeเรา raoยัง yangจำได้ jam dâiดี dii

A love that looks old now, but we still remember it well.

มันman (it) often comes before a verb or adjective in speech and songs, just for emphasis: รักที่มันดูเก่าrák tîi man duu gào = a love that (it) looks old. ดูduu + adjective = to look…: ดูดีduu dii = looks good, ดูเหนื่อยduu nùeay = looks tired. ยังyang = still; จำได้jam dâi = to remember; จำได้ดีjam dâi dii = to remember well.
  3. กลัว gluaว่า wâaวัน wanหนึ่ง nùengฉัน chǎnจะ jàลืม luuemว่า wâaฉัน chǎnเคย koeiรัก rákเธอ toeยังไง yang-ngai

I'm afraid that one day I'll forget how I used to love you.

กลัวว่าglua wâa + clause = to be afraid that: กลัวว่าฝนจะตกglua wâa fǒn jà dtòk = I'm afraid it'll rain. วันหนึ่งwan nùeng = one day; in speech often วันนึงwan nueng. ลืมว่าluuem wâa = to forget that, or how. เคยkoei + verb = used to: เคยรักkoei rák = used to love. ยังไงyang-ngai = how.
  4. กลัว gluaฉัน chǎnจะ jàไม่ mâiเสียใจ sǐa-jaiกลัว gluaวัน wanหนึ่ง nùengเธอ toeหาย hǎaiไป bpai

I'm afraid I won't even be sad; afraid that one day you'll be gone.

The title line, and its twist: the singer isn't afraid of the pain of losing you, but of not feeling it any more. The title says กลัวว่าglua wâa, but here he sings just กลัวglua + clause, twice, dropping the ว่าwâa as Thais often do when they speak. เสียใจsǐa-jai = sad, sorry; ไม่เสียใจmâi sǐa-jai = not sad. หายไปhǎai bpai = to disappear, to be gone (หายhǎai + ไปbpai, 'away'): กระเป๋าหายไปgrà-bpǎo hǎai bpai = my bag is gone.
  5. เพราะ práwฉัน chǎnมี miiเธอ toeคนเดียว kon-diawคือ kuueเธอ toeคนเดียว kon-diaw

Because you're the only one I have: only you.

    คนเดียวkon-diaw = just one person, alone: มีเธอคนเดียวmii toe kon-diaw = to have only you, อยู่คนเดียวyùu kon-diaw = to live alone. คือkuue = it is, that is: คือเธอคนเดียวkuue toe kon-diaw = it's you alone. เพราะpráw = because.
  6. เรื่อง rûeangระหว่าง rá-wàangเรา raoสมควร sǒm-kuanจบ jòpลง longใช่ไหม châi mǎi

What's between us should come to an end, shouldn't it?

The song ends on a question. เรื่องระหว่างเราrûeang rá-wàang rao = what's between us, our story (ระหว่างrá-wàang = between). สมควรsǒm-kuan = should, ought to, a little more formal than ควรkuan. จบลงjòp long = to come to an end (ลงlong, 'down', marks a finish). ใช่ไหมchâi mǎi at the end = …right? isn't it?

Grammar in this song

กว่าจะgwàa jà + verb = by the time (something finally happens), it took…: กว่าจะหาเจอก็เที่ยงแล้วgwàa jà hǎa joe gâw tîang láew (by the time I found it, it was noon). It tells you the wait was long. Don't mix it up with กว่าgwàa after an adjective: แพงกว่าpaeng gwàa = more expensive.

กลัวว่าglua wâa + clause = to be afraid that: กลัวว่าจะไม่ทันglua wâa jà mâi tan (I'm afraid I won't make it in time); in speech and in the chorus, the ว่าwâa often goes: กลัวฉันจะไม่เสียใจglua chǎn jà mâi sǐa-jai. เคยkoei + verb = used to, have ever: เคยรักkoei rák (used to love), เคยไปไหมkoei bpai mǎi (have you ever been?). ใช่ไหมchâi mǎi at the end turns a statement into 'isn't it?': เธอชอบฉันใช่ไหมtoe châwp chǎn châi mǎi (you like me, don't you?).

The culture behind it

PURPEECH is a five-piece indie-pop band from Chiang Mai: they met as students at Chiang Mai Rajabhat University and played the city's bars at night, and their first song came out in 2021. The words and melody of "กลัวว่าฉันจะไม่เสียใจglua wâa chǎn jà mâi sǐa-jai" are by the lead singer, Sarawooth Suyaket, and the song came out on 9 April 2025 on MILK! BKK, a label of What The Duck. The band says it is about a long relationship in which feelings wear thin: what once made you cry becomes routine, and even 'sorry' is said out of duty.

The song climbed slowly and stayed. Ten months after its release it reached number one on the Official Thailand Chart, and it spent 22 weeks there between January and July 2026; in October 2026, a year and a half after it first entered Spotify Thailand's daily chart, it was still in its top ten. Its patterns, กว่าจะgwàa jà, กลัวว่าglua wâa and เคยkoei, are ones you will use every day.
