Bright Vachirawitไบร์ท วชิรวิชญ์

What the song is about

คั่นกูkân guu, “Kan Goo (Come Between Me)”, is a T-pop song by Bright Vachirawit (2020). The ending theme of 2gether (2020), the college romance between Sarawat and Tine that made Bright and Win famous far beyond Thailand, sung by Bright himself as his first single. A bouncy love song about a coincidence that's no coincidence and not letting anyone come between you. Its title is a famous piece of Thai wordplay, and its lines teach whether, or, fate, should, wherever and the direction words come in and go in.

Slang and casual Thai

  • กู guu

I, me (very rough or very intimate)

In the title only: the song itself says ฉันchǎn. กูguu is what Thai guys often call themselves with close friends. Fine among close friends of the same age, rude anywhere else: never use it with strangers, elders or at work.

Grammar in this song

เข้ามาkâo maa and เข้าไปkâo bpai: which way? A verb of movement plus มาmaa moves towards the speaker, plus ไปbpai away from them. The first line plays on it: เธอเข้ามาtoe kâo maa (you came in, to me) or ฉันเองที่เข้าไปchǎn eeng tîi kâo bpai (it was me who went in, to you). The same goes for กลับมาglàp maa (come back) and กลับไปglàp bpai (go back), เอามาao maa (bring) and เอาไปao bpai (take away).

Question word … ก็gâw = whoever, wherever, whatever. ที่ไหนมีเธอก็ควรมีฉันtîi-nǎi mii toe gâw kuan mii chǎn (wherever there's you, there should be me). Compare ไปไหนก็ได้bpai nǎi gâw dâi (I'll go anywhere) and ใครก็รู้krai gâw rúu (everybody knows).

จะเป็นjà bpen X หรือrǔue Y = whether it's X or Y: จะเป็นโชคชะตาหรือความตั้งใจjà bpen chôok-chá-dtaa rǔue kwaam dtâng-jai.

The culture behind it

The title is a spoonerism. The series is called เพราะเราคู่กันpráw rao kûu gan, "because we belong together". Keep the first consonant and the tone of each syllable, swap the vowels with their final sounds, and คู่กันkûu gan becomes คั่นกูkân guu, "come between me", with the rough กูguu for "me". Thais call this game คำผวนkam-pǔan and love it, from silly jokes to cheeky double meanings, and fans were already calling JittiRain's original novel คั่นกูkân guu before the song took the name. The Thai title of the series itself comes from คู่กันkûu gan, a song by the band Scrubb, whose music fills the story.

2gether (GMMTV, 2020) is about Tine, a law student who asks the aloof guitarist Sarawat to pretend to be his boyfriend to put off a persistent admirer, and the fake romance turns real. It aired on GMM 25 and LINE TV from February to May 2020 and passed 100 million views on LINE TV within two months. Bright (Vachirawit Chivaaree), who plays Sarawat, sang "คั่นกูkân guu", the first single of his life, and Win (Metawin) appears in the video. The words and music are by Achariya Dulyapaiboon, who also wrote Billkin's "ชอบตัวเองตอนอยู่กับเธอchâwp dtua-eeng dtawn yùu gàp toe". The video passed a million views in 23 hours, and the song went to number one on JOOX's Thailand Top 100.
