The culture behind it

BNK48 is the Bangkok sister group of Japan's AKB48, formed in 2017 around the idea of "idols you can meet": daily theatre shows, handshake events and fan votes for the line-up. Its devoted fans call themselves โอตะoo-dtà (otaku). "คุกกี้เสี่ยงทายkúk-gîi sìang-taai" is the Thai version of AKB48's 2013 hit "Koisuru Fortune Cookie", with Thai lyrics by songwriter Man Laongfong. The video came out in November 2017, and by early 2018 the song and its simple dance were everywhere: surgeons dancing in operating rooms, office parties, bank and stock-exchange mascots at fairs, even the prime minister trying the "rice-ball" hand move at Government House.

The theme fits Thailand perfectly. Fortune-telling is part of daily life: people shake เซียมซีsiam-sii fortune sticks at temples, consult หมอดูmǎw-duu (fortune tellers) before weddings and business deals, and choose lucky numbers and colours, so letting a cookie decide your love life sounds very Thai.
