- ได้ข่าว dâi kàaoว่า wâaเขา kǎoอ่ะ àดี diiเธอ toeต้อง dtâwngดู duuฉัน chǎnก่อน gàwn
I hear she's great, but you've got to look at me first.
ได้ข่าวว่าdâi kàao wâa = I hear that…, word is that… (ข่าวkàao = news): ได้ข่าวว่าจะแต่งงานdâi kàao wâa jà dtàeng-ngaan = I hear you're getting married. อ่ะà is a casual particle, here setting 'her' apart: as for her… (also written อะà). ดูduu = to look at, and ก่อนgàwn at the end = first: ดูฉันก่อนduu chǎn gàwn = look at me first. In the official English subtitles, 'she' is a rival: the one they sing to is taken. - แล้ว láewเธอ toeจะ jàเห็น hěnบาง baangคน konที่ tîiใจ jaiเธอ toeตามหา dtaam-hǎa
Then you'll see someone your heart has been looking for.
The line before asks him just to think, to open his heart a little. แล้วláew at the start = and then: แล้วเธอจะเห็นláew toe jà hěn = then you'll see. บางคนbaang kon = someone, some people (บางbaang = some). ใจเธอตามหาjai toe dtaam-hǎa = your heart is searching for: ตามหาdtaam-hǎa = to search for (someone or something lost). - เขา kǎoรัก rákเธอ toeเท่าไร tâo-raiฉัน chǎnรัก rákเธอ toeมาก mâakกว่า gwàa
However much she loves you, I love you more.
The hook. เท่าไรtâo-rai (how much) after a verb = however much: เขารักเธอเท่าไรkǎo rák toe tâo-rai = however much she loves you. มากกว่าmâak gwàa = more: ฉันรักเธอมากกว่าchǎn rák toe mâak gwàa = I love you more. Adjective + กว่าgwàa = more … than, -er: ดีกว่าdii gwàa = better, ถูกกว่าtùuk gwàa = cheaper. - วัดกัน wát ganเลย loeiฉัน chǎnคง kongไม่ mâiแพ้ páe
Let's measure up; I don't think I'll lose.
วัดwát is a temple, but it is also a verb, to measure, and วัดกันwát gan = to measure yourselves against each other, to see who's better: that's the title, วัดwát + ปะหล่ะbpà-là, 'wanna measure up?'. เลยloei after a verb = go ahead, right now: กินเลยgin loei = go ahead and eat. คงkong = probably: คงไม่แพ้kong mâi páe = I don't think I'll lose. แพ้páe = to lose (a game), the opposite of ชนะchá-ná, to win; it also means to be allergic. - เธอ toeอยู่ yùuกับ gàpเขา kǎoก็ gâwดี diiแต่ dtàeอยู่ yùuกับ gàpฉัน chǎnจะ jàดีกว่า dii gwàa
Being with her is fine, but being with me would be better.
อยู่กับyùu gàp = to be with, to live with. ก็ดีgâw dii = is fine, is good too: แบบนี้ก็ดีbàep níi gâw dii = this is fine too. จะดีกว่าjà dii gwàa = would be better. ดีกว่าdii gwàa = better, and in a suggestion, 'let's … instead': กินข้าวก่อนดีกว่าgin kâao gàwn dii gwàa = let's eat first. Between the two halves, a singer's 'ai-ai-ai'. - อยาก yàakให้ hâiลอง lawngมา maaวัดกัน wát ganดู duu
I want you to come and see how we measure up.
ลองlawng + verb + ดูduu = to try … and see: ลองชิมดูlawng chim duu = have a taste and see. มาmaa before a verb = to come and: ลองมาวัดกันดูlawng maa wát gan duu = come and see how we measure up. อยากให้yàak hâi + verb = I want you to; here the อยากyàak is sung so softly you may only hear ให้hâi. The line goes on to promise that one day you'll know.
Words you'll learn
- ได้ข่าว dâi kàao
to hear (news); I hear that…
ข่าวkàao = news. ไม่ได้ข่าวเลยmâi dâi kàao loei = I haven't heard from them at all.
- ตามหา dtaam-hǎa
to search for (someone or something lost)
- เห็น hěn
to see
To see or notice something; for watching on purpose (a film, a show, the monks' procession) use ดูduu.
- ใจ jai
heart, mind
- กว่า gwàa
more … (than), -er (after an adjective)
It goes after the adjective: ถูกกว่าtùuk gwàa cheaper, ใหญ่กว่าyài gwàa bigger. You know it from ดีกว่าdii gwàa (better).
- วัดกัน wát gan
to measure up (against each other), to compete
วัดwát = to measure, a homonym of วัดwát, a temple.
- ดีกว่า dii gwàa
better; let's … instead (in suggestions)
Put it after a suggestion: กินที่นี่ดีกว่าgin tîi-nîi dii gwàa let's eat here instead.
- ลอง lawng
to try (try … and see)
You know it from ลองใส่lawng sài (try on). Put the action in the middle and ดูduu at the end: ลองกินดูlawng gin duu try it and see.
Slang and casual Thai
- อ่ะ à
casual particle (a shrug, a little emphasis)
The way it's written in chats; also อะà.
- ปะหล่ะ bpà-là
… or not, then? (casual)
From เปล่าbplàao (or not?), said quickly as ปะbpà, and ล่ะlâ (then?), here spelled หล่ะlà as people type it.
Grammar in this song
More than: มากกว่าmâak gwàa, adjective + กว่าgwàa. ฉันรักเธอมากกว่าchǎn rák toe mâak gwàa (I love you more), อยู่กับฉันจะดีกว่าyùu gàp chǎn jà dii gwàa (being with me would be better), ร้านนี้ถูกกว่าráan níi tùuk gwàa (this shop is cheaper).
However much: verb + เท่าไรtâo-rai / เท่าไหร่tâo-rài. After a verb, 'how much' becomes 'however much', and the second half answers it: เขารักเธอเท่าไรฉันรักเธอมากกว่าkǎo rák toe tâo-rai chǎn rák toe mâak gwàa (however much she loves you, I love you more).
Try and see: ลองlawng + verb + ดูduu. ลองใส่ดูlawng sài duu (try it on), ลองถามดูlawng tǎam duu (try asking), ลองมาวัดกันดูlawng maa wát gan duu (come and see how we measure up).
The culture behind it
4EVE is a girl group of seven, chosen in 2020 on Workpoint TV's talent show 4EVE Girl Group Star from more than a thousand hopefuls, and the first act of the label XOXO Entertainment; the name joins 'forever' with Eve, 'a woman who lives forever'. "Test Me", produced by the rapper and producer UrboyTJ, was on their first album, The First Album (March 2021), and became their breakthrough: it reached number two on Spotify's weekly chart for Thailand (kworb), won the popular vote for Best Music of the Year at the TOTY Music Awards 2021 (The Standard), and its 'summer video' from April 2021, whose credits name three of the members, Jorin, Hannah and Aheye, has nearly 150 million views.
T-pop, Thai pop with idol groups, dance routines and fandoms much like K-pop's, sings in the Thai that young people type in chats: อ่ะà for a shrug, and the title's ปะหล่ะbpà-là, 'or not, then?', which turns วัดwát, to measure, into a dare: wanna bet?
