What the song is about
กีดกันgìit-gan, “Skyline (Kept Apart)”, is a T-pop song by Billkin (2020). The theme of I Told Sunset About You (2020), the Phuket coming-of-age story that made Billkin a star. An epic, old-fashioned love song in the style of Chinese martial-arts films: the sky, the mountains and time can't keep two lovers apart, but fate might. Its lines teach the poetic Thai of songs and novels: even though, true love, why, gladly, give up, ending, and the difference between two words that look almost the same.

Grammar in this song
Poetic words and their everyday twins. Thai songs, like novels, borrow words from the written language. Learn to recognise them, and use the everyday word yourself: ไยyai = ทำไมtam-mai (why), เนิ่นนานnôen-naan = นานnaan (a long time), พบpóp = เจอjoe (to meet), แผ่นฟ้าpàen-fáa = ฟ้าfáa (the sky), ใดdai = ไหนnǎi (which, any), แม้máe = ถึงtǔeng (even though), พ่ายแพ้pâai-páe = แพ้páe (to lose).
Verb + แค่ไหนkâe-nǎi = however much. พยายามแค่ไหนpá-yaa-yaam kâe-nǎi (however hard I try), ไกลแค่ไหนก็จะไปglai kâe-nǎi gâw jà bpai (I'll go however far it is). As a question it simply asks 'how much?': ไกลแค่ไหนglai kâe-nǎi (how far is it?).
Verb + ให้hâi + adjective = so that it ends up… กีดกั้นเราให้ไกลgìit-gân rao hâi glai (keep us apart, far away), พูดให้ช้าลงหน่อยpûut hâi cháa long nàwy (speak a bit more slowly), ทำให้ดีtam hâi dii (do it well).
The culture behind it
กีดกันgìit-gan or กีดกั้นgìit-gân? The title and most of the lines differ by one tone mark. The Royal Institute dictionary defines กีดกันgìit-gan as to stop someone from doing something easily, and กีดกั้นgìit-gân as to block, to bar the way. The title uses the first, the chorus mostly sings the second, and a Thairath columnist wrote that the song presses the two together until they can't be told apart.
I Told Sunset About You (2020), made by Nadao Bangkok and directed by Naruebet Kuno, follows Teh (Billkin) and Oh-aew (PP Krit), childhood friends turned rivals in Phuket, who meet again at a Chinese tutoring school while preparing for their university entrance exams. It streamed on LINE TV from 22 October 2020, and a second part, I Promised You the Moon, followed in 2021. Teh's family is Chinese-Thai, and the song leans into that world: Pantapol "Ohm" Prasarnrajkit, the singer of the rock band Cocktail, wrote it with Thitiwat Rongthong, who arranged it, drawing on the sound of 1990s Chinese martial-arts films. Billkin said it has the feel of a martial-arts story, with poetic words that make it hard to sing, and that it is about finally finding the love you've searched for, then having to fight through every obstacle, even fate. The video, shot on a beach in Phuket with PP Krit, came out on 30 September 2020, three weeks before the series.
