What the song is about

ชอบตัวเองตอนอยู่กับเธอchâwp dtua-eeng dtawn yùu gàp toe, “I Like Us (I Like Myself When I'm with You)”, is a T-pop song by Billkin (2022). A warm, soul-flavoured love song about an ordinary guy who likes the person he becomes when he's with someone. Its clear A2 lines teach when (with tawn and wee-laa), to become, better than before and some, plus the heart words Thais use to describe character: hot-tempered, mean, and the very casual 'good-for-nothing'.

Key lines, explained

Tap a line to hear it. Once the video is playing, lines jump to their moment in the song.

  1. ฉัน chǎnชอบ châwpตัวเอง dtua-eengเวลา wee-laaที่ tîiอยู่ yùuกับ gàpเธอ toe

I like myself when I'm with you.

ตัวเองdtua-eeng = yourself, oneself: ชอบตัวเองchâwp dtua-eeng = to like yourself. เวลาที่wee-laa tîi + clause = (at) the time when, whenever. The title says the same with ตอนdtawn: ตอนอยู่กับเธอdtawn yùu gàp toe = when I'm with you. อยู่กับyùu gàp = to be with someone.
  2. เหมือน mǔeanฉัน chǎnได้ dâiกลาย glaaiมา maaเป็น bpenอีก ìikคน konที่ tîiดี diiกว่า gwàaเดิม doem

It's as if I've turned into someone else, better than I was before.

เหมือนmǔean at the start of a sentence = it's as if. กลายเป็นglaai-bpen = to become, to turn into; with มาmaa in the middle, กลายมาเป็นglaai maa bpen, it's a change that has come about over time. อีกคนìik kon = another person. ดีกว่าเดิมdii gwàa doem = better than before (เดิมdoem = how it was); สวยกว่าเดิมsǔay gwàa doem = prettier than before.
  3. บางที baang-tiiก็ gâwใจร้อน jai-ráwnบางที baang-tiiก็ gâwใจร้าย jai-ráai

    Sometimes I'm hot-tempered, sometimes I'm mean.

บางทีbaang-tii = sometimes (also 'maybe'). Thai describes character with ใจjai, the heart: ใจร้อนjai-ráwn (hot heart) = impatient, quick to anger, and ใจร้ายjai-ráai (cruel heart) = mean, unkind. Their opposites are ใจเย็นjai-yen (cool heart) = calm and ใจดีjai-dii (good heart) = kind. ใจเย็นๆjai yen-yen, 'cool your heart', is what Thais say to calm someone down.
  4. บาง baangเรื่อง rûeangก็ gâwไม่เอาไหน mâi ao nǎiซะ sáเลย loei

And at some things I'm completely hopeless.

บางbaang + noun = some: บางเรื่องbaang rûeang = some things, บางคนbaang kon = some people. ไม่เอาไหนmâi ao nǎi = useless, good-for-nothing, a casual way to put yourself (or a lazy brother) down. ซะเลยsá loei is the spoken form of เสียเลยsǐa loei = completely, totally.
  5. ไม่ mâiมี miiหรอก ràwkจุดหมาย jùt-mǎaiไม่ mâiมี miiอะไร à-raiเลย loei

No goal at all, nothing at all.

ไม่มีmâi mii = there isn't, I don't have. หรอกràwk softens a negative, 'really, at all'; songs may move it, as here, before the noun. จุดหมายjùt-mǎai = a goal, a destination. ไม่มีอะไรเลยmâi mii à-rai loei = nothing at all: after a negative, เลยloei means 'at all'.
  6. เธอ toeทำให้ tam-hâiฉัน chǎnรู้ rúuว่า wâaฉัน chǎnเป็น bpenคน konที่ tîiดี diiได้ dâiมาก mâakแค่ไหน kâe-nǎi

You made me realise how good a person I can be.

ทำให้tam-hâi + person + verb = to make someone feel, know or do something: ทำให้ฉันรู้ว่าtam-hâi chǎn rúu wâa = made me realise that. Adjective + ได้dâi = can be: ดีได้dii dâi = can be good. มากแค่ไหนmâak kâe-nǎi = how much, to what extent; ไกลแค่ไหนglai kâe-nǎi = how far.
  7. กลายเป็น glaai-bpenอีก ìikคน konที่ tîiรัก rákใคร kraiเป็น bpen

turned into someone else, someone who knows how to love.

The guy who used to be hot-tempered and mean has changed. After a verb, เป็นbpen means to know how to, a skill you've learned: ว่ายน้ำเป็นwâai-náam bpen = can swim, ขับรถเป็นkàp rót bpen = can drive. So รักใครเป็นrák krai bpen = knows how to love someone; ใครkrai here means 'someone', not 'who?'.

Grammar in this song

Saying 'when'. For something that happens at a certain time (not a question), Thai uses ตอนdtawn or เวลาwee-laa, often followed by ที่tîi: the title ชอบตัวเองตอนอยู่กับเธอchâwp dtua-eeng dtawn yùu gàp toe and the first line ชอบตัวเองเวลาที่อยู่กับเธอchâwp dtua-eeng wee-laa tîi yùu gàp toe say the same thing. ตอนdtawn is a little more casual and good for one occasion (ตอนเด็กๆdtawn dèk-dèk = when I was a kid); เวลาwee-laa often means 'whenever'.

Change and comparison. กลายเป็นglaai-bpen + noun = to become, to turn into. กว่าgwàa after an adjective compares: ดีกว่าเดิมdii gwàa doem = better than before. And after a verb, เป็นbpen means to know how to: รักใครเป็นrák krai bpen, ทำอาหารเป็นtam aa-hǎan bpen (can cook).

Heart words. Thai describes people through ใจjai: ใจร้อนjai-ráwn impatient, ใจเย็นjai-yen calm, ใจร้ายjai-ráai mean, ใจดีjai-dii kind, ใจกว้างjai-gwâang generous (a wide heart), ใจแคบjai-kâep petty (a narrow heart).

The culture behind it

Billkin (Putthipong Assaratanakul, born in Bangkok in 1999) became a star as Teh in the 2020 series I Told Sunset About You, a coming-of-age love story between two boys in Phuket, opposite PP Krit, and sang its theme song, "กีดกันgìit-gan" (Skyline). In 2022 he started his own label, Billkin Entertainment, and "ชอบตัวเองตอนอยู่กับเธอchâwp dtua-eeng dtawn yùu gàp toe" (July 2022) was its first music video. The songwriter Achariya Dulyapaiboon wrote the words and the melody, with a soul feel and a horn section; in the video Billkin practises every day at a dance class to be a good partner for the girl he met there.

The lyrics turn a Thai way of talking about people into a love song. Thais describe character with ใจjai, the heart, so someone is ใจร้อนjai-ráwn, ใจเย็นjai-yen or ใจดีjai-dii rather than impatient, calm or kind. Being ใจเย็นjai-yen is high praise in Thailand, where losing your temper in public loses face; calling yourself ใจร้อนjai-ráwn and ไม่เอาไหนmâi ao nǎi, as the singer does, is the modest, likeable way to talk about yourself.
