- อย่า yàaให้ hâiฉัน chǎnรั้ง rángเธอ toeไว้ wáiเลย loei
Don't let me hold you back.
The song's first words, sung slowly over a pause. อย่าyàa + verb = don't; อย่าให้yàa hâi + person + verb = don't let someone…: อย่าให้เขารู้yàa hâi kǎo rúu = don't let him find out. รั้งráng = to hold someone back, to keep them from leaving; ไว้wái after it = to keep in place: รั้งไว้ráng wái = to hold on to. เลยloei at the end makes the 'don't' warmer and firmer. Men sing ฉันchǎn (I) too: in songs it is everyone's 'I', though a man says ผมpǒm when he talks. - ด้วย dûayน้ำตา náam-dtaaฉัน chǎnเดินมาส่ง doen maa sòng
In tears, I've walked you here to see you off.
Just before it he sings 'and today I've walked you here to see you off', then sings it again. ด้วยdûay + noun = with, by means of: ด้วยน้ำตาdûay náam-dtaa = in tears (น้ำตาnáam-dtaa = tears, 'eye water'). เดินมาส่งdoen maa sòng = to walk someone somewhere and see them off: เดินdoen = to walk, มาmaa = (to) here, ส่งsòng = to send, to see off; ไปส่งbpai sòng = to take someone (home, to the airport). It is also the Thai title of First Anuwat's BYE. - ที่ tîiเธอ toeเห็น hěnแค่ kâeฝุ่น fùnมัน manเข้า kâoตา dtaaฉัน chǎnไม่ mâiได้ dâiร้องไห้ ráwng-hâai
What you see is just dust in my eye. I'm not crying.
The hook, just after a soft และláe (and), and the ฝุ่นfùn (dust) of the title. ที่เธอเห็นtîi toe hěn = what you see (ที่tîi + clause = the thing that…). เข้าตาkâo dtaa = to get in your eye: ฝุ่นเข้าตาfùn kâo dtaa is the excuse Thais give for tears they'd rather not explain. ไม่ได้mâi dâi + verb = it's not that I'm …-ing, whatever it looks like: ฉันไม่ได้ร้องไห้chǎn mâi dâi ráwng-hâai = I'm not crying; ฉันไม่ได้โกรธchǎn mâi dâi gròot = I'm not angry. - อย่า yàaกังวล gang-wonฉัน chǎnไม่เป็นไร mâi bpen rai
Don't worry, I'm fine.
กังวลgang-won = to be anxious, worried about how things will go, a step more serious than ห่วงhùang, to worry about someone you love: อย่ากังวลyàa gang-won = don't worry. ไม่เป็นไรmâi bpen rai = it's fine, never mind, maybe the most Thai phrase of all; ฉันไม่เป็นไรchǎn mâi bpen rai = I'm fine. The chorus ends by wishing her well on her way, ทางtaang. - วัน wanพรุ่งนี้ prûng-níiเธอ toeต้อง dtâwngเจอ joeคน konที่ tîiดีกว่า dii gwàa
Tomorrow you're sure to find someone better.
พรุ่งนี้prûng-níi = tomorrow; วันพรุ่งนี้wan prûng-níi, 'the day of tomorrow', is the fuller song form, and also means the future. ต้องdtâwng = must; about what's coming it means bound to: เธอต้องชอบtoe dtâwng châwp = you'll love it, for sure. คนที่ดีกว่าkon tîi dii gwàa = someone better: ดีกว่าdii gwàa = better (กว่าgwàa = more than). - ฉัน chǎnจะ jàยอม yawmปล่อย bplàwyไป bpai
I'll let you go.
The bridge. ยอมyawm + verb = to agree to, to be willing to do something you'd rather not: ยอมปล่อยyawm bplàwy = to let go, giving in. ปล่อยbplàwy = to let go, to release: ปล่อยมือbplàwy muue = to let go of a hand; ปล่อยไปbplàwy bpai = to let it go. The bridge goes on: it's fine, don't worry.

Grammar in this song
Don't: อย่าyàa + verb (เลยloei). อย่ากังวลyàa gang-won (don't worry), อย่าร้องไห้yàa ráwng-hâai (don't cry); อย่าให้yàa hâi + person + verb = don't let someone…: อย่าให้ฉันรั้งเธอไว้เลยyàa hâi chǎn ráng toe wái loei (don't let me hold you back). เลยloei at the end turns it into a plea.
It's not that…: ไม่ได้mâi dâi + verb. It denies what someone thinks is happening: ฉันไม่ได้ร้องไห้chǎn mâi dâi ráwng-hâai (I'm not crying), ไม่ได้ว่าอะไรmâi dâi wâa à-rai (I'm not criticising). Plain ไม่ร้องไห้mâi ráwng-hâai just means not crying.
Better: ดีกว่าdii gwàa. Adjective + กว่าgwàa = more …: คนที่ดีกว่าkon tîi dii gwàa (someone better), ถูกกว่าtùuk gwàa (cheaper). At the end of a suggestion, ดีกว่าdii gwàa means let's … instead: กลับบ้านดีกว่าglàp bâan dii gwàa (let's go home instead).
The culture behind it
Atom (ชนกันต์ รัตนอุดมchá-ná-gan rát-dtà-ná-ù-dom), whose first single Please had made his name a year earlier, released "ทางของฝุ่นtaang kǎwng fùn" (Dust) on 18 February 2016, his third single on White Music, a GMM Grammy label. He wrote the words and music himself, three or four years before, he said; Ball of the band Apartment Khunpa produced it again, and this time the acoustic guitar makes way for soul and blues with a big-band horn section. It went to number one on the iTunes Store in Thailand and is on his first album, CYANTIST (2017).
The song is a goodbye that tries hard not to look like one: he walks her to the start of her own road, ทางของเธอtaang kǎwng toe, and the tears are only ฝุ่นfùn, dust, and the title joins the two. ฝุ่นเข้าตาfùn kâo dtaa is the excuse Thais reach for when they don't want to admit they're crying. In the video, a man's ex asks him to make the pre-wedding film for her wedding to someone else, and he puts his own story into it.
