Mai Pen Rong (ไม่เป็นรอง): meaning and key lines

COCKTAILค็อกเทล

What the song is about

ไม่เป็นรองmâi bpen rawng, “Mai Pen Rong (Second to None)”, is a Thai rock song by COCKTAIL (2022). A love song written as a contest: the singer knows he is one of many men trying to win the same woman, and swears he is second to none. Its lines teach nouns made from verbs and adjectives (intention, reality), being one of many, hoping to, doing something for someone, never, and the solemn please of signs and vows.

Tap a line to hear it. Once the video is playing, lines jump to their moment in the song.

  1. และ láeความตั้งใจ kwaam-dtâng-jaiของ kǎwngฉัน chǎnคือ kuueการ gaanได้ dâiใกล้ glâiเธอ toe

And what I've set my heart on is being close to you

ตั้งใจdtâng-jai = to intend, to set your heart on, and ความkwaam in front makes it a noun: ความตั้งใจkwaam-dtâng-jai = intention, what you are determined to do. คือkuue = is (saying what something is): ความตั้งใจของฉันคือkwaam-dtâng-jai kǎwng chǎn kuue = my aim is. การgaan + verb = the act of…: การได้ใกล้เธอgaan dâi glâi toe = getting to be near you (ใกล้glâi = near, close). และláe (and) is the written word; speech prefers แล้วก็láew gâw.
  2. แต่ dtàeความเป็นจริง kwaam-bpen-jingมี miiใคร kraiหลาย lǎaiคน konไม่ mâiต่างกัน dtàang-gan

But the truth is, plenty of others are no different

ความเป็นจริงkwaam-bpen-jing = reality, how things really are (เป็นจริงbpen jing = to be real, to come true): ในความเป็นจริงnai kwaam-bpen-jing = in reality. มีmii + people = there are…: มีใครหลายคนmii krai lǎai kon = there are lots of people (ใครkrai = someone, here 'others'; หลายlǎai = many, several). ไม่ต่างกันmâi dtàang-gan = no different, just the same: they all want her too. With จากjàak you say who from: ไม่ต่างจากฉันmâi dtàang jàak chǎn = no different from me.
  3. ฉัน chǎnก็ gâwเป็น bpenคน konหนึ่ง nùengไม่ mâiต่าง dtàangที่ tîiหวัง wǎngจะ jàเป็น bpenเจ้าของ jâo-kǎwngหัวใจ hǔa-jai

I'm one of them too, no different, hoping to own your heart

ก็gâw here = too, also: ฉันก็เป็นคนหนึ่งchǎn gâw bpen kon nùeng = I'm one (of them) too. คนหนึ่งkon nùeng = one person, someone: in Thai the number comes after the counting word, as in เพื่อนคนหนึ่งpûean kon nùeng (a friend of mine). หวังwǎng = to hope; หวังจะwǎng jà + verb = to hope to… เจ้าของjâo-kǎwng = owner: เจ้าของร้านjâo-kǎwng ráan = the shop owner, เจ้าของหัวใจjâo-kǎwng hǔa-jai = the one who owns someone's heart, the one they love.
  4. โปรด bpròotจง jongรู้ rúuว่า wâaที่ tîiฉัน chǎnทำ tamลงไป long bpaiฉัน chǎnทำ tamไป bpaiเพื่อ pûeaใคร krai

Please know who everything I've done was for

โปรดbpròot = please, the formal one of signs and announcements (โปรดถอดรองเท้าbpròot tàwt rawng-táao = please take off your shoes), and จงjong makes it solemn, like a vow: โปรดจงรู้bpròot jong rúu = please know this. ที่ฉันทำลงไปtîi chǎn tam long bpai = what I have done (ลงไปlong bpai, literally 'down', after a verb: went ahead and did it). เพื่อpûea = for (the sake of): ทำไปเพื่อใครtam bpai pûea krai = who it was done for. The answer is her, of course.
  5. ไม่ mâiเคย koeiเป็น bpenสอง sǎwngไม่ mâiรอง rawngใคร krai

I've never come second, I'm behind no one

ไม่เคยmâi koei = never (have): ไม่เคยไปmâi koei bpai = I've never been there. เป็นสองbpen sǎwng = to be number two. รองrawng = second (in rank): รองใครrawng krai = come behind someone, so ไม่รองใครmâi rawng krai = second to none. The title ไม่เป็นรองmâi bpen rawng says the same thing: เป็นรองbpen rawng is to be the underdog, at a disadvantage.
  6. ไม่ mâiเคย koeiพ่ายแพ้ pâai-páeแม้ máeหน้าไหน nâa-nǎi

I've never lost to anyone, whoever they are

พ่ายแพ้pâai-páe = to be defeated (formal: songs, news, speeches); everyday Thai says แพ้páe, to lose: แพ้อีกแล้วpáe ìik láew = we lost again. แม้máe = even. หน้าไหนnâa-nǎi = anyone at all, literally 'whichever face': a defiant word, like 'whoever they are'. Fine in a song or a pep talk; said to a person it sounds like picking a fight.

  • หน้าไหน nâa-nǎi

Grammar in this song

ความkwaam + adjective or verb makes a noun of a state or feeling: ตั้งใจdtâng-jai (to intend) → ความตั้งใจkwaam-dtâng-jai (intention), จริงjing (true) → ความจริงkwaam-jing (the truth), เป็นจริงbpen jing (to be real) → ความเป็นจริงkwaam-bpen-jing (reality). การgaan + action verb names the action: การได้ใกล้เธอgaan dâi glâi toe (getting close to you).

Thai has several pleases: โปรดbpròot on signs and in announcements (with จงjong it turns solemn), กรุณาgà-rú-naa in formal requests, ได้โปรดdâi bpròot for pleading, and in everyday speech ช่วยchûay + verb + หน่อยnàwy: ช่วยปิดประตูหน่อยchûay bpìt bprà-dtuu nàwy = could you close the door?

The culture behind it

COCKTAIL started out in 2002 as a group of students at Triam Udom Suksa School in Bangkok led by their singer and songwriter, Ohm, and grew into a band that played two nights at Rajamangala National Stadium in March 2025. They split up as planned on 24 December 2025, 23 years to the day after their first album, at the end of a farewell tour of all 77 provinces. Ohm wrote "ไม่เป็นรองmâi bpen rawng", which first came out on 23 August 2022 on GeneLab, the label he founded within GMM Grammy (today's GMM Music), to promote Nine Songs of Fantasy, a Chinese-style mobile game; its arrangement adds Chinese instruments and an orchestra. It was later included on their last album, Yours Ever (2024), and in October 2026 it was still number 3 on TikTok's trending songs in Thailand (kworb).

รองrawng is second in rank: รองชนะเลิศrawng chá-ná-lôet is the runner-up of a contest, and a team that เป็นรองbpen rawng is the underdog. So ไม่เป็นรองใครmâi bpen rawng krai means as good as anyone, second to none. As a verb, รองrawng is to put something underneath: shoes, รองเท้าrawng-táao, are what goes under your feet.
