Chujai (ชูใจ): meaning and key lines

F.HERO

What the song is about

ชูใจchuu-jai, “Chujai (Uplift)”, is a Thai rap song by F.HERO (2015). F.HERO wrote this rap for his baby daughter, nicknamed Chujai, the year she was born: a father's warning about everything the world will throw at a girl (strict teachers, bullies, gossip, men who lie, heartbreak) and his promise that home will always be there. Its lines are full of plain, everyday phrases: you might get…, don't pay them any mind, however many times you fall, that's why I named you…, remember this. Its gentle chorus is borrowed from a 1988 song.

You might get hit by your teacher for doing badly at primary school,

The song opens with what may go wrong at school. อาจจะàat-jà + verb = might: อาจจะฝนตกàat-jà fǒn dtòk = it might rain. โดนdoon + doer + verb = to get something done to you: โดนครูตีdoon kruu dtii = to get hit by the teacher; with no doer, โดนตีdoon dtii = to get hit. เรียนไม่เก่งrian mâi gèng, 'study not well', = to be bad at school: verb + เก่งgèng = to be good at doing it. ชั้นประถมchán bprà-tǒm = primary school, grades 1 to 6 (ชั้นchán is a grade here, not a floor).
  2. อย่า yàaไป bpaiสน sǒnเงยหน้า ngoei-nâaลูก lûukพ่อ pâwต้อง dtâwngเดิน doen

Pay them no mind, lift your head: Daddy's girl has to keep walking.

Before this, he warns her that people will say สมน้ำหน้าsǒm-náam-nâa, 'serves you right', to rub it in. อย่าไปyàa bpai + verb = don't go and…, don't bother…: อย่าไปสนyàa bpai sǒn = don't pay them any attention (สนsǒn, short for สนใจsǒn-jai, = to care, to mind). เงยหน้าngoei-nâa = to raise your head, to look up. ลูกพ่อlûuk pâw = Daddy's child: a Thai father calls his child ลูกlûuk and himself พ่อpâw, as if 'Daddy' were 'I'. ต้องdtâwng + verb = must, have to.
  3. วันนี้ wan-níiเธอ toeยืน yuuenเอง eengได้ dâiหกล้ม hòk-lómจะ jàซักเท่าไหร่ sák tâo-rài

Today you can stand on your own, however many times you fall.

Just before, he remembers her crawling (คลานklaan) and learning to stand (ตั้งไข่dtâng-kài, literally 'to stand an egg up'). ยืนyuuen = to stand; ยืนเองได้yuuen eeng dâi = can stand by yourself (เองeeng = on your own). หกล้มhòk-lóm = to fall over. จะjà + verb + ซักเท่าไหร่sák tâo-rài = however much you…: หกล้มจะซักเท่าไหร่hòk-lóm jà sák tâo-rài = however many times you fall. ซักsák is how สักsàk (about, just) is often said and written; on its own, ซักsák also means to wash clothes.
  4. หลับตา làp-dtaaซิ síที่รัก tîi-rák

    Close your eyes, my darling,

The chorus, sung slowly, is a sample of Charas Fuengarom singing his 1988 song หลับตาlàp-dtaa, used with GMM Grammy's permission. หลับตาlàp-dtaa = to close your eyes (หลับlàp = to be asleep, ตาdtaa = eye); ลืมตาluuem-dtaa, 'forget the eyes', = to open them. ซิsí (also spelled สิsì) after a verb gently urges: go on, do. ที่รักtîi-rák = darling, my love: here a father to his little girl. The chorus goes on: in my arms, no one will ever be able to hurt you.
  5. โลก lôokมัน manก็ gâwเป็น bpenแบบนี้ bàep níiพ่อ pâwบอก bàwkว่า wâaไม่ใช่ mâi châiเรื่อง rûeangบังเอิญ bang-oen

That's how the world is; Dad's telling you it's no accident.

Verse two lists what may happen to a girl who grows up pretty, or not: being laughed at, men who lie to her to get her into bed or after her money. โลกมันก็เป็นแบบนี้lôok man gâw bpen bàep níi = that's just how the world is: มันman (it) repeats the subject, as casual speech does, and แบบนี้bàep níi = like this. พ่อบอกว่าpâw bàwk wâa = Dad says that…: Thai parents speak of themselves as พ่อpâw and แม่mâe to their children. ไม่ใช่เรื่องบังเอิญmâi châi rûeang bang-oen = it's no coincidence: ไม่ใช่mâi châi = is not (before a noun), เรื่องrûeang = a matter, บังเอิญbang-oen = by chance.
  6. จึง juengเป็น bpenเหตุผล hèet-pǒnที่ tîiพ่อ pâwตั้งชื่อ dtâng-chûueเธอ toeว่า wâaชูใจ chuu-jai

That's the reason Dad named you Chujai,

จึงเป็นเหตุผลที่jueng bpen hèet-pǒn tîi = that's the reason (why)…: เหตุผลhèet-pǒn = reason, and จึงjueng = so, therefore, a written word that speeches and rappers like. ตั้งชื่อdtâng-chûue = to name, literally 'set a name': ตั้งชื่อลูกว่าdtâng-chûue lûuk wâa … = to name your child …. ชูใจchuu-jai, 'raise the heart', is a verb, to lift someone's spirits, and his daughter's nickname. The next line explains it.
  7. เพราะ práwอยาก yàakให้ hâiความดี kwaam-diiมา maaชูใจ chuu-jaiเธอ toeเหนือสิ่งอื่นใด nǔea sìng ùuen dai

because I want goodness to lift your spirits, above all else.

อยากให้yàak hâi + someone + verb = to want someone to…: อยากให้เธอมาyàak hâi toe maa = I want you to come. ความดีkwaam-dii = goodness, good deeds: ความkwaam turns ดีdii (good) into a noun, as in ความรักkwaam-rák (love). Here ชูใจchuu-jai is the verb: may goodness hold her heart up. เหนือสิ่งอื่นใดnǔea sìng ùuen dai = above all else: เหนือnǔea = above (and north), สิ่งอื่นใดsìng ùuen dai = any other thing.
  8. เธอ toeจง jongจำ jamไว้ wáiนะ náลูก lûukจากนี้ jàak níiใน naiทุกๆ túk-túkวัน wan

Remember this, my child, from now on, every single day:

The last verse imagines the day he and her mother are gone. จงjong before a verb makes a solemn order or wish, as in old-fashioned advice: จงจำไว้jong jam wái = remember this. Verb + ไว้wái = do it and keep it: จำไว้jam wái = remember it, จดไว้jòt wái = write it down. จากนี้jàak níi = from now on. ทุกๆวันtúk-túk wan = every single day. What she must remember comes next: she still matters, and they will always hold her and love her.

The culture behind it

F.HERO (Nattawut Srimok), the rapper from Mae Sai in Chiang Rai behind Kularb, wrote "ชูใจchuu-jai" for his daughter Na-on, nicknamed Chujai, born in February 2015. The song came out that September, under the stage name he used then, ฟักกลิ้งฮีโร่fák-glîng hii-rôo, an English pun he later shortened to F.HERO; the video is home footage of the baby and of his hand writing out the lyrics. He gave the income from its downloads to the Baan Nana foundation, which helps children go to school along the border at Mae Sai (the video's description). Its chorus is a sample of Charas Fuengarom singing his 1988 song หลับตาlàp-dtaa ('Close your eyes'), used with GMM Grammy's permission; the video thanks the comedian Udom Taepanich, who Sanook reported had helped pay for the rights.

ชูใจchuu-jai, 'to raise the heart', means to lift someone's spirits, and Thais who went to primary school between 1978 and 1994 also know the name from Chujai, one of the children in the national Thai readers มานะมานีปิติชูใจmaa-ná maa-nii bpì-dtì chuu-jai (Thai Wikipedia). The rap is a father's frank list of what the world does to girls: a smack from the teacher, older kids taking her snack money, gossip, diet pills, men who will lie to her for sex or for money, a broken heart, a degree she doesn't finish. He tells her never to hurt herself, that she has nothing to be shy about if one day she turns out to be LGBT, only about doing wrong, and that whatever happens, her parents are waiting with a hug. The song has no swear words, but it is blunt: it uses crude slang for sex, mentions virginity and speaks of self-harm, so it is marked explicit; the lines here are gentle.
