What the song is about
ตีหนึ่งที่คูเมืองdtii nùeng tîi kuu-mueang, “Ti Nueng Thi Khu Mueang (1 a.m. at the Old City Moat)”, is a Thai rap song by ILLSLICK (2025). A late-night love song: a shy guy comes into Chiang Mai's old city at one in the morning hoping to meet the girl he watches online, while her fans shower her live stream with gifts. The hook is in Northern Thai, the language of Chiang Mai, and the verses are everyday Central Thai about streams, gifts and donations, so it teaches the Thai clock, casual spoken forms and your first words of kham mueang.

- ตี dtiiหนึ่ง nùengอ้าย âaiเข้า kâoมา maaใน naiเวียง wiangตี dtiiหนึ่ง nùengอ้าย âaiเข้า kâoมา maaคูเมือง kuu-mueang
At one in the morning I came into the old town; at one in the morning I came to the moat.
The Thai clock: from 1 to 5 a.m. you say ตีdtii (strike) + the hour, so ตีหนึ่งdtii nùeng = 1 a.m. and ตีห้าdtii hâa = 5 a.m. Northern Thai: อ้ายâai, older brother, is the singer talking about himself, like พี่pîi in Central Thai; เวียงwiang = a walled town, here Chiang Mai's old city. คูเมืองkuu-mueang = the city moat, the square of water around it. เข้ามาkâo maa = to come in(to). - เลย loeiเปิด bpòetไป bpaiดู duuเธอ toeใน naiไลฟ์ lái
So I opened your live stream to watch you.
เลยloei at the start of a sentence = so, and so. เปิดbpòet = to open, to turn on (an app, a video, the TV). Verb + ไปbpai + verb: เปิดไปดูbpòet bpai duu = to open it and watch. ไลฟ์lái is the English 'live': a live stream (ดูไลฟ์duu lái = to watch a live), or, as a verb, to go live. - รอ rawไร raiรีบ rîipDonate doo-nétสิ sì
What are you waiting for? Hurry up and donate!
รอไรraw rai is a quick, spoken รออะไรraw à-rai, 'what are you waiting for?': in casual speech อะไรà-rai often shrinks to ไรrai. รีบrîip = to hurry: รีบไปrîip bpai = hurry up and go. สิsì at the end urges: go on! 'Donate' is the livestream word for sending money or gifts to a streamer, written in English in the lyrics and said โดเนทdoo-nét. - ฉัน chǎnตั้งใจ dtâng-jaiมา maaพบ pópเธอ toeทั้งที่ táng-tîiฉัน chǎnขี้อาย kîi-aai
I came here on purpose to meet you, even though I'm shy.
ตั้งใจdtâng-jai = to intend, to do on purpose: ตั้งใจมาdtâng-jai maa = came specially. พบpóp is a formal 'to meet'; in conversation Thais say เจอjoe. ทั้งที่táng-tîi = even though. ขี้อายkîi-aai = shy by nature: ขี้kîi + a feeling makes a habit of it (ขี้เกียจkîi-gìat = lazy, ขี้หึงkîi-hǔeng = jealous). - ฉัน chǎnไม่ mâiทำ tamอะไร à-raiนั่ง nângดู duuเธอ toeไลฟ์ lái
I don't do a thing, I just sit watching you stream.
ไม่ทำอะไรmâi tam à-rai = to do nothing: after a negative, อะไรà-rai means 'anything'. นั่งnâng + verb = to sit doing something: นั่งดูnâng duu = to sit watching. Here ไลฟ์lái is a verb: เธอไลฟ์toe lái = you go live, you stream. - อู้ ûuอู้เมือง ûu mueangแล๊ láeอ้าย âaiไข้หื้อ kâi hûueตัว dtuaอู้เมือง ûu mueangแล๊ láe
Talk, talk in Northern Thai! I want you to talk in Northern Thai.
Northern Thai → Central: อู้ûu = พูดpûut, to speak, and อู้เมืองûu mueang = to speak kham mueang, Northern Thai. ไข้หื้อkâi hûue = อยากให้yàak hâi, to want (someone) to: ไข้kâi (also spelled ใค่kâi) = อยากyàak, want, and หื้อhûue = ให้hâi; careful: in Central Thai ไข้kâi is a fever. ตัวdtua = you, to a lover or a friend. แล๊láe at the end urges, like Central สิsì: go on! The next line, also Northern, asks her to come and talk so they understand each other: ฮู้เรื่องhúu-rûeang = รู้เรื่องrúu-rûeang.

Grammar in this song
The Thai clock splits the day into parts: ตีหนึ่งdtii nùeng to ตีห้าdtii hâa (1 to 5 a.m.), หกโมงเช้าhòk moong cháao (6 a.m.), เที่ยงtîang (noon), บ่ายโมงbàai moong (1 p.m.), ห้าโมงเย็นhâa moong yen (5 p.m.), หนึ่งทุ่มnùeng tûm (7 p.m.) and เที่ยงคืนtîang-kuuen (midnight). So the title, 'one a.m. at the moat', is ตีหนึ่งที่คูเมืองdtii nùeng tîi kuu-mueang.
Northern Thai in a few rules. Kham mueang keeps Central Thai grammar but swaps words: อู้ûu = พูดpûut, ใค่kâi = อยากyàak, หื้อhûue = ให้hâi, ก่อgàw = ไหมmǎi. Its sounds shift too: Central r is often h (ฮู้húu = รู้rúu), and the letters คkaw, ทtaw, พpaw and ชchaw, said k, t, p and ch in Bangkok, often become g, dt, bp and j: คำkam → กำgam, ทางtaang → ตางdtaang, พ่อpâw → ป้อbpâw. That's why Northerners call their language กำเมืองgam-mueang. The romanization reads Northern words as their spelling would sound in Central Thai; real Northern tones differ, so copy the singer.
Casual Central Thai in the verses: ไรrai for อะไรà-rai, เลยloei = so, รีบrîip + verb + สิsì = hurry up and…!, and ขี้kîi + feeling = a person who is always…
The culture behind it
ILLSLICK (อิลสลิกin-sà-lík), real name Thikhamphon Wetthaisong, was born in Khon Kaen in 1986, grew up with his aunt in Lampang and went to high school in Chiang Mai, where he started rapping (Thai Wikipedia). An independent artist, he puts his songs out on his own YouTube channel, where two of them, his remix of 'Kiss' and 'If You Had to Choose', have each passed 550 million views. 'Ti Nueng Thi Khu Mueang' came out in March 2025 and passed 17 million views in under ten days; YouTube's list of the year's most popular music videos in Thailand put it third.
The setting is Chiang Mai's old city, a square walled town surrounded by a moat, the คูเมืองkuu-mueang, dug, according to Thailand's environment office, in the time of King Mangrai, who founded the city. Its language is Northern Thai, คำเมืองkam-mueang, the language of the old Lanna kingdom, still spoken across the upper North. In the song a lovesick guy drifts into town at 1 a.m. while the girl he adores is live on her phone, collecting gifts from fans: a very 2020s romance. The English rap in the middle has one swear word; the key lines here are clean.
