Key lines, explained

Tap a line to hear it. Once the video is playing, lines jump to their moment in the song.

  1. พี่ pîiไม่ mâiมี miiLouis lǔiVuitton wít-dtawngมี miiแต่ dtàeหนี้ nîiก้อน gâwnโต dtoo

I don't have Louis Vuitton; all I have is a mountain of debt.

    พี่pîi = 'I' when a man talks to his girlfriend (she is น้องnáwng). ไม่มีmâi mii X มีแต่mii dtàe Y = I don't have X, I only have Y. หนี้nîi = debt. ก้อนโตgâwn dtoo = a big lump.
  2. อยู่ yùuกับ gàpพี่ pîiน่ะ nâมัน manลำบาก lam-bàakนะ náหรือว่า rǔue-wâaน้อง náwngจะ jàทน ton

Life with me is tough, you know; or will you put up with it?

อยู่กับyùu gàp = to live with, be with. มันman = 'it', a dummy subject in casual speech (มันลำบากman lam-bàak = it's hard). หรือว่าrǔue-wâa = 'or…?', offering another possibility. ทนton = to put up with, endure; ทนไม่ไหวton mâi wǎi = I can't take it any more.
  3. กระเป๋า grà-bpǎoของ kǎwngพี่ pîiDior dì-awแต่ dtàeตัว dtuaพี่ pîiน่ะ nâไม่ mâiมี miiตังค์ dtang

My bag is Dior, but I myself have no money.

ของkǎwng = of, belonging to. ตัวdtua + person = that person himself: ตัวพี่dtua pîi = me myself. ตังค์dtang = the everyday word for money (from สตางค์sà-dtaang). Flashing brand names while broke is the running joke.
  4. เธอ toeบอก bàwkมัน manดู duuไม่ mâiดี diiเธอ toeชอบ châwpคน konที่ tîiมัน manมี miiฐานะ tǎa-ná

She says it doesn't look good; she likes a guy who's well-off.

ดูduu + adjective = to look, seem (ดูดีduu dii = looks good). คนที่kon tîi… = a person who… มีฐานะmii tǎa-ná = to be well-off (literally 'to have status'). Calling a person มันman ('it') is very casual and can be rude.
  5. หก hòkโมง moongเช้า cháaoพระ práมา maaพี่ pîiยัง yangไม่ mâiตื่น dtùuen

Six in the morning, the monks come by, and I'm still not up.

หกโมงเช้าhòk moong cháao = 6 a.m. (daytime hours use โมงmoong: เจ็ดโมงเช้าjèt moong cháao, บ่ายสองโมงbàai sǎwng moong). ยังไม่yang mâi + verb = not yet: ยังไม่ตื่นyang mâi dtùuen = not awake yet. Monks walk their alms round at dawn while people wait with food.
  6. รัก rákเรา raoนี่ nîiแสน sǎenอาภัพ aa-pápเพียง piangเพราะ práwว่า wâaเรา raoไม่ mâiมี miiเงิน ngoenหมื่น mùuen

Our love is so ill-fated, just because we don't have ten thousand baht.

เพียงเพราะว่าpiang práw wâa = just because. แสนsǎen + adjective = extremely (poetic; แสนsǎen is also the number 100,000). อาภัพaa-páp = unlucky, ill-fated. เงินหมื่นngoen mùuen = money in the tens of thousands.
  7. หมื่น mùuenหนึ่ง nùengหมื่น mùuenสอง sǎwngหมื่น mùuenสาม sǎamหมื่น mùuenสี่ sìiหมื่น mùuenห้า hâaหมื่น mùuenหก hòkหมื่น mùuenเจ็ด jèt

Eleven thousand, twelve thousand, thirteen thousand… seventeen thousand.

    Spoken shortcut: หมื่นmùuen + digit = ten thousand plus that many thousand: หมื่นสองmùuen sǎwng = 12,000 (short for หนึ่งหมื่นสองพันnùeng mùuen sǎwng pan). Compare สองหมื่นsǎwng mùuen = 20,000. It works everywhere: พันห้าpan hâa = 1,500, แสนห้าsǎen hâa = 150,000. The lyric sheet writes the digits: หมื่นmùuen 1 หมื่นmùuen 2…
  8. ใคร kraiบอก bàwkใคร kraiเตือน dtueanอะไร à-raiใคร kraiพูด pûutอะไร à-raiพี่ pîiก็ gâwไม่ mâiฟัง fang

Whoever tells me, whoever warns me, whatever anyone says, I just don't listen.

Question words + ก็gâw = no matter who/what: ใครพูดอะไรพี่ก็ไม่ฟังkrai pûut à-rai pîi gâw mâi fang = whatever anyone says, I don't listen. เตือนdtuean = to warn, to remind.

Slang and casual Thai

  • พี่ pîi

I or you for the older partner in a couple

The younger partner (usually the woman) is น้องnáwng. Both work as 'I' and 'you', depending on who is speaking.

  • มัน man

it; (casual or rude) he, she

Fine for things and animals; for people it's very casual and can sound rude.

  • หมื่นสอง mùuen sǎwng

    12,000 (spoken shortcut)

    Big numbers are clipped in speech: พันห้าpan hâa = 1,500, หมื่นสามmùuen sǎam = 13,000.

  • น่ะ nâ

casual particle: as for…, you know

Sets up the topic or softens a statement, very common in speech: ตัวพี่น่ะdtua pîi nâ = as for me.

Grammar in this song

ไม่มีmâi mii X มีแต่mii dtàe Y = I don't have X, only Y. หรือว่าrǔue-wâa offers an alternative as a question ("or will you…?"). ดูduu + adjective = to look/seem, and คนที่kon tîi… is a relative clause: คนที่มีฐานะkon tîi mii tǎa-ná "a guy who is well-off".

ยังไม่yang mâi + verb = not yet. เพียงเพราะว่าpiang práw wâa = just because. Question word + ก็gâw + verb = no matter who/what: ใครพูดอะไรพี่ก็ไม่ฟังkrai pûut à-rai pîi gâw mâi fang. And the counting line is a free numbers lesson: หมื่นสองmùuen sǎwng = 12,000, but สองหมื่นsǎwng mùuen = 20,000.

The culture behind it

"ทนton" is by SPRITE, who was only 15 at the time, a former child luk thung singer who had helped his mother sell popcorn and became runner-up on Show Me The Money Thailand, and GUYGEEGEE, a Thai-British rapper and Chulalongkorn graduate; both are on producer NINO's label HYPE TRAIN. They wrote it in a single night, and according to SPRITE the story is partly GUY's own. Released on 29 April 2021, it became the first Thai-language song on the Billboard Global (excl. US) chart a month later. The video was shot on Yin Yom beach in Pattaya.

The joke hits home because money is openly part of Thai dating: families talk about a partner's ฐานะtǎa-ná (financial standing), and a traditional wedding includes a สินสอดsǐn-sàwt (bride price) paid to the bride's parents. Listen also for very Thai details: monks on their dawn alms round at หกโมงเช้าhòk moong cháao, and the clipped way Thais count money.
