Galaxy Express (รถไฟบนฟ้า): meaning and key lines

D GERRARD

What the song is about

รถไฟบนฟ้าrót-fai bon fáa, “Galaxy Express (Train in the Sky)”, is a Thai rap song by D GERRARD (2024). A dreamy invitation: if there were a train in the sky, would you ride it with me, from Mars to Pluto, away from the days that seem to lead nowhere? D GERRARD wrote it as a sequel to his hit Galaxy, mixing old-school R&B, a touch of opera and a short rap. Its clear lines teach the planets, how about…?, the seat next to me is free, I've never been, will you come with me?, and don't worry.

The chorus. ไปด้วยกันมั้ยbpai dûay-gan mái = shall we go together?, will you come with me? (ด้วยกันdûay-gan = together; มั้ยmái is how ไหมmǎi sounds in speech). ไปจากbpai jàak = to go away from, to leave. วันที่wan tîi + description = days when…, days that… ดูduu + adjective = to look, to seem: ดูเหนื่อยduu nùeay = you look tired. ไร้จุดหมายrái jùt-mǎai = aimless: ไร้rái = without, a written word, and จุดหมายjùt-mǎai = destination, goal. Then he switches to English: we need no money, because his train runs on love, not like a Ferrari.
  8. ฉัน chǎnแค่ kâeคน konเพ้อฝัน póe-fǎnที่ tîiรอ rawเธอ toeบอก bàwkฝันดี fǎn-dii

Grammar in this song

How about…?: … + หน่อยดีมั้ยnàwy dii mái (or ดีไหมdii mǎi) turns a plan into a gentle suggestion: นั่งรถไฟไปหน่อยดีมั้ยnâng rót-fai bpai nàwy dii mái (how about taking the train?), พักก่อนดีไหมpák gàwn dii mǎi (shall we take a break?).

Never got to: ไม่เคยได้mâi koei dâi + verb: ไม่เคยได้ไปmâi koei dâi bpai (I've never been), ไม่เคยได้เจอmâi koei dâi joe (I've never had the chance to meet them). Without ได้dâi, ไม่เคยไปmâi koei bpai simply means I've never gone.

No need: ไม่ต้องmâi dtâwng + verb: ไม่ต้องกังวลmâi dtâwng gang-won (no need to worry), ไม่ต้องจ่ายmâi dtâwng jàai (you don't have to pay). Compare อย่าyàa + verb, a plain don't: อย่ากังวลyàa gang-won (don't worry).

The culture behind it

D GERRARD (Big) first caught attention on The X Factor Thailand in 2017, where he sang only songs he had written himself, then broke through with 'Galaxy', his first single on Warner Music Thailand's label Wayfer Records, which has passed 200 million views (Warner Music Thailand). He is also an actor: he plays Yat in the hit films about rival vocational-school gangs, 4 Kings (2021) and 4 Kings 2 (2023). "รถไฟบนฟ้าrót-fai bon fáa" came out on 5 January 2024, a few weeks after 4 Kings 2 opened. In the video's description he explains it: people kept asking him for another 'Galaxy', so he wondered what would take you into space if not a rocket, and chose a train, public transport that carries many people, to comfort the lonely and the aimless, with himself as tour guide. The sound is meant to be nostalgic: old-school R&B with a classical touch, an opera-style run of notes, and a rap to keep his signature.

The planets in Thai are ดาวdaao (star) + a name, and five of them give their names to days of the week: วันอังคารwan-ang-kaan is Mars's day, Tuesday, just as English names Saturday after Saturn. See the days of the week.
