Key lines, explained

Tap a line to hear it. Once the video is playing, lines jump to their moment in the song.

  1. พัก pákก่อน gàwnแม่ mâeบอก bàwkให้ hâiเธอ toeพักผ่อน pák-pàwn

Take a break; Mama told you to get some rest.

Verb + ก่อนgàwn = do it first, for now: พักก่อนpák gàwn = take a break for now, and as slang 'not now / pass'. บอกให้bàwk hâi + person + verb = to tell someone to do something. พักผ่อนpák-pàwn = to rest, relax. MILLI calls herself แม่mâe (Mom), a sassy self-name from queer and girl-squad slang.
  2. ยัง yangละอ่อน lá-àwnยัง yangสาว sǎaoลูกหลาว lûuk-lǎaoอย่า yàaไป bpaiทัก tákก่อน gàwn

You're still so young, baby girl; don't be the one to text first.

ละอ่อนlá-àwn = young, a kid (Northern Thai, also used playfully). ลูกหลาวlûuk-lǎao is MILLI's baby-talk version of ลูกสาวlûuk-sǎao (daughter, girl). อย่าไปyàa bpai + verb = don't go and… ทักก่อนták gàwn = to message first, a big question in Thai dating.
  3. พัก pákพัก pákพัก pákเธอ toeควร kuanกลับ glàpไป bpaiพัก pákก่อน gàwn

Rest, rest, rest: you should go back and take a break.

    ควรkuan + verb = should: ควรพักผ่อนkuan pák-pàwn = you should rest. กลับไปglàp bpai + verb = go back and…
  4. อย่า yàaเพิ่ง pôengทัก tákทัก tákทัก tákเธอ toeอย่า yàaเพิ่ง pôengไป bpaiทัก tákก่อน gàwn

Don't text yet, text, text: don't you go texting him first.

อย่าเพิ่งyàa pôeng + verb = don't… yet, hold off: อย่าเพิ่งไปyàa pôeng bpai = don't go yet, อย่าเพิ่งกินyàa pôeng gin = don't eat yet. One of the most useful patterns in daily Thai.
  5. คิด kítจะ jàพัก pákก็ gâwKitKat kít-káetคิด kítจะ jàซัก sákก็ gâwบรีส brìitแงะ ngáe

Thinking of a break? Kit Kat. Thinking of laundry? Breeze.

A parody of Thai TV slogans: Kit Kat's คิดจะพัก คิดถึงคิทแคทkít jà pák kít-tǔeng kít-káet ('have a break, have a Kit Kat') and ads for Breeze washing powder. คิดจะkít jà + verb = to think of doing something. ซักsák = to wash (clothes). แงะngáe just adds bounce to the rhyme; the official subtitles leave it untranslated.
  6. มึง muengพูด pûutไม่รู้เรื่อง mâi rúu-rûeangควร kuanกลับบ้าน glàp bâanไป bpaiนอน nawnหมอน mǎwn

You're talking nonsense; you should go home and hit the pillow.

พูดไม่รู้เรื่องpûut mâi rúu-rûeang = to talk nonsense, make no sense (ฟังไม่รู้เรื่องfang mâi rúu-rûeang = can't understand what you hear). กลับบ้านglàp bâan = to go home. นอนหมอนnawn mǎwn = to lie on a pillow, go to sleep. มึงmueng is the rude 'you', MILLI's weapon of choice for roasting someone.

Words you'll learn

  • พัก pák

to stay (at a hotel); to rest

For a short stay somewhere: a hotel, a guesthouse, a friend's place. It also means 'to rest, to take a break'.

  • ก่อน gàwn

    first; before

ไปก่อนนะbpai gàwn ná = I'm off (leaving before you).

  • พักผ่อน pák-pàwn

    to rest, to relax

  • บอกให้ bàwk hâi

    to tell (someone) to

  • สาว sǎao

    young woman

  • ทัก ták

to message someone (first); to greet

  • ควร kuan

    should, ought to

Softer than ต้องdtâwng: it's advice, not a rule, and 'shouldn't' is ไม่ควรmâi kuan.

  • กลับไป glàp bpai

    to go back

  • อย่าเพิ่ง yàa pôeng

    don't… yet

  • คิดจะ kít jà

to think of doing, intend to

  • กลับบ้าน glàp bâan

to go home; to take away (food)

At a food stall, กลับบ้านglàp bâan (go back home) means takeaway: the vendor packs your food in a bag or box.

  • หมอน mǎwn

    pillow

Slang and casual Thai

  • พักก่อน pák gàwn

not now; pass; sit this one out

Became a catchphrase thanks to this song; used to turn down an idea or a person.

  • แม่ mâe

'Mama': a sassy way to refer to yourself or a fierce woman

From queer and girl-squad slang; normally แม่mâe just means mother.

  • ลูกหลาว lûuk-lǎao

baby girl (baby talk for 'daughter')

    Playful mispronunciation; ลูกสาวlûuk-sǎao = daughter.

  • ละอ่อน lá-àwn

    kid, youngster

Northern Thai (คำเมืองkam-mueang) for 'child'; you'll hear it in Chiang Mai.

  • มึง mueng

    you (rough, intimate or insulting)

Among close friends it's normal; aimed at someone else it's an insult. Don't use it yourself.

Grammar in this song

Verb + ก่อนgàwn = do it first / for now: พักก่อนpák gàwn, ไปก่อนนะbpai gàwn ná (I'll go ahead). บอกให้bàwk hâi + person + verb = tell someone to: แม่บอกให้เธอพักผ่อนmâe bàwk hâi toe pák-pàwn. ควรkuan + verb = should.

Two handy negatives: อย่าyàa + verb = don't, and อย่าเพิ่งyàa pôeng + verb = don't… yet (อย่าเพิ่งทักyàa pôeng ták, อย่าเพิ่งไปyàa pôeng bpai). คิดจะkít jà + verb = to think of doing / intend to, which MILLI turns into an ad-slogan joke: คิดจะพักก็kít jà pák gâw Kit Kat.

The culture behind it

MILLI (Danupha Khanatheerakul) first appeared on the TV contest The Rapper, and "พักก่อนpák gàwn" was her debut single on the YUPP! label, released in February 2020 when she was 17; its title came from her own catchphrase. It went viral at once, and even the Thai Food and Drug Administration borrowed the chorus for a campaign warning young people about spiked drinks at parties. In 2022 she became the first Thai solo artist to play Coachella, where she ate mango sticky rice on stage, and sales of the dessert jumped back home.

Her style is rapid-fire Bangkok slang mixed with Northern and Isan words, English, queer slang (calling herself แม่mâe), baby talk (ลูกหลาวlûuk-lǎao, น๊อนนอนnáwn nawn) and parodies of TV ads, so understanding her is a real badge of honour. The full song is very explicit; the key lines here are clean apart from มึงmueng.
