Key lines, explained

  1. ให้ hâiโชคดี chôok-diiสุขี sù-kǐiวันเกิด wan-gòet

Good luck and happiness on your birthday,

Thai wishes often start with ให้hâi, short for ขอให้kǎw-hâi, 'may (you) …'; a tap on ให้hâi shows its everyday meanings, to give and to let. โชคดีchôok-dii = good luck, lucky (โชคchôok = luck, ดีdii = good). สุขีsù-kǐi is a poetic word for happy, at ease, often said sùk-kǐi, as if it were spelled สุขขีsùk-kǐi. วันเกิดwan-gòet = birthday, literally 'the day (you were) born'. The song is all wishes, so 'you' is never said.
  2. อายุยืน aa-yú yuuenปลอดโรค bplàwt-rôokปลอดภัย bplàwt-pai

a long life, free of illness and safe from harm.

อายุยืนaa-yú yuuen = a long life, long-lived (อายุaa-yú = age; ยืนyuuen, to stand, here means to last). ปลอดbplàwt = free of, clear of: ปลอดโรคbplàwt-rôok = free of illness (โรคrôok = disease), ปลอดภัยbplàwt-pai = safe, free of danger (ภัยpai = danger). Good health and a long life are the wishes for parents and grandparents.

Grammar in this song

Wishes: ขอให้kǎw-hâi + what you wish. Thai blessings start with ขอให้kǎw-hâi, 'may …', or in a song just ให้hâi, and need no 'you': ขอให้มีความสุขมากๆkǎw-hâi mii kwaam-sùk mâak-mâak (wishing you lots of happiness), ขอให้สุขภาพแข็งแรงkǎw-hâi sùk-kà-pâap kǎeng-raeng (wishing you good health), ขอให้โชคดีkǎw-hâi chôok-dii (good luck). String two or three together, as the song does.

ปลอดbplàwt + a bad thing: free of it. ปลอดภัยbplàwt-pai (safe, free of danger), ปลอดโรคbplàwt-rôok (free of disease), and on signs ปลอดบุหรี่bplàwt bù-rìi (smoke-free).

The culture behind it

A song of birthday blessings. Thanin Inthrathep (born 1943) is one of the great voices of ลูกกรุงlûuk-grung, the refined Bangkok ballads of the mid-20th century. He received a royal Golden Record award for เหมือนคนละฟากฟ้าmǔean kon lá fâak fáa at the first ceremony, in 1964, and he is the president of the Singers' Association of Thailand (Thai Wikipedia). The words and music of this song are by Thaweephong Maneenil (1944–1983), who also wrote Thanin's hit ขาดฉันแล้วเธอจะรู้สึกkàat chǎn láew toe jà rúu-sùek; the upload is the official audio from Rose Media, one of the labels Thanin has recorded for.

The song is one verse of eight short wishes, sung twice: the language of a birthday card, read aloud. Thais add wishes like these after สุขสันต์วันเกิดsùk-sǎn wan-gòet, happy birthday, and many start their birthday by making merit at a temple. Our page on happy birthday in Thai has the everyday wishes with audio, and Pim Thitiyakorn's modern birthday song is on this site too.
