Key lines, explained

Tap a line to hear it. Once the video is playing, lines jump to their moment in the song.

  1. ใน naiวันนี้ wan-níiเป็น bpenวันเกิด wan-gòet

    Today is your birthday,

ในวันนี้nai wan-níi = on this day, today, a little more formal than plain วันนี้wan-níi. เป็นbpen = is: วันนี้เป็นวันเกิดwan-níi bpen wan-gòet = today is (your) birthday; Thai leaves out 'your' when it's clear. วันเกิดwan-gòet = birthday: วันwan (day) + เกิดgòet (to be born). The song's title is the Thai 'happy birthday', สุขสันต์วันเกิดsùk-sǎn wan-gòet.
  2. อยาก yàakจะ jàขอ kǎwดาว daaoจาก jàakฟ้า fáa

I'd like to ask the stars in the sky

อยากจะyàak jà + verb = I'd like to …, a softer อยากyàak that songs love. ขอkǎw = to ask for, and ขอดาวจากฟ้าkǎw daao jàak fáa is literally 'ask the stars from the sky', for a favour. ดาวdaao = star, จากjàak = from, ฟ้าfáa = the sky. The chorus goes on to say what she asks them for, and line 3 ends it.
  3. ให้ hâiเธอ toeเจอ joeแต่ dtàeสิ่ง sìngที่ tîiดี dii

may you find only good things.

ให้hâi + person + verb = may (they) …, let (them) …: ให้เธอเจอhâi toe joe = may you find. เจอjoe = to meet, to come across. แต่dtàe usually means 'but'; after a verb and before what it describes it means 'only': เจอแต่สิ่งที่ดีjoe dtàe sìng tîi dii = meet only good things, กินแต่ผักgin dtàe pàk = eat only vegetables. สิ่งที่ดีsìng tîi dii = good things, 'things that are good': ที่tîi joins a description to a noun. She holds the last word, ดีdii, for a long time.
  4. ดูแล duu-laeตัวเอง dtua-eengให้ดี hâi dii

    Take good care of yourself.

The song's most useful line, and how it ends: ดูแลตัวเองให้ดีduu-lae dtua-eeng hâi dii = take good care of yourself, said to someone going away or feeling unwell. ดูแลduu-lae = to look after, ตัวเองdtua-eeng = yourself, oneself, and verb + ให้ดีhâi dii = do it properly, well: คิดให้ดีkít hâi dii = think it over carefully, เก็บให้ดีgèp hâi dii = keep it safe.

Grammar in this song

Wishing with ให้hâi: may … ! ให้hâi + person + verb wishes it for them: ให้เธอเจอแต่สิ่งที่ดีhâi toe joe dtàe sìng tîi dii (may you find only good things). In cards and messages Thais start with ขอให้kǎw-hâi: ขอให้มีความสุขมากๆkǎw-hâi mii kwaam-sùk mâak-mâak (wishing you lots of happiness).

แต่dtàe = only. Between a verb and a noun, แต่dtàe means 'only, nothing but': ดื่มแต่น้ำdùuem dtàe náam (drink only water), กินแต่ผักgin dtàe pàk (eat only vegetables). Anywhere else it's 'but'.

Verb + ให้ดีhâi dii: do it well. ดูแลตัวเองให้ดีduu-lae dtua-eeng hâi dii (take good care of yourself), คิดให้ดีkít hâi dii (think it over carefully).

The culture behind it

A birthday song for someone far away. Pim Thitiyakorn released this song on her own YouTube channel in August 2019, with a rap verse by Dear of Acappella7; Pongsatorn Kaewsuk wrote the words and music. It's a birthday wish for someone far away (in the video, a young woman sends birthday messages to a young man in Los Angeles), and it ends, like the second verse, on the wish in line 4.

Its title is the Thai for happy birthday: สุขสันต์sùk-sǎn (happy, a word kept for occasions) + วันเกิดwan-gòet (birthday). At parties Thais usually sing the familiar tune in English, then often a round in Thai with สุขสันต์วันเกิดsùk-sǎn wan-gòet in place of 'happy birthday to you'. Our page on happy birthday in Thai has the wishes and replies with audio, and Thanin Inthrathep's classic birthday blessing is on this site too.
