อะ (a) in Thai: what it means and how to use it

อะà is the casual little sound at the end of a Thai sentence: a shrug, a bit of emphasis, a spoken question mark.

อะ à

casual particle at the end: a shrug, a little emphasis (speech and chats) particle

  • à low
  • Low: flat and lower than your normal voice, dropping a little at the end.

How to use it

อะà is the most casual way to end a sentence. It adds a shrug or a touch of emphasis, like "though" or "y'know", or works as a spoken question mark: จริงอะjing à, seriously? You'll hear it all the time among young Thais and see it in chats, often spelled อ่ะà. It's too casual for strangers and anyone older: with them, end with ครับkráp or ค่ะkâ instead.
