We in Thai

“We” in Thai is เราrao; you'll also hear พวกเราpûak-rao (all of us).

เรา rao

we, us pronoun

  • rao mid
  • Mid: level, in your normal speaking voice.

Friends also use it casually to mean 'I'.

พวกเรา pûak-rao

we, us (all of us) pronoun

  • pûak falling
  • rao mid
  • Falling: start high and drop clearly, like a firm “No!”

How to use it

เราrao is "we" and "us", and in casual speech, chats and songs it often means "I": a soft, neutral word that many women and young people use instead of ฉันchǎn. พวกเราpûak-rao makes it clearly plural, "all of us". Thai has no separate word for "our": put เราrao after the noun, as in บ้านเราbâan rao, our house.
