He, she in Thai

“He, she” in Thai is เขาkǎo; you'll also hear เธอtoe (she).

เขา kǎo

he, she; him, her; they pronoun

  • kǎo rising
  • Rising: start low, dip, then rise to the top, like a doubtful “Really?”

One word for he, she and they: the context tells you which.

เธอ toe

she (also 'you' to someone close) pronoun

  • toe mid
  • Mid: level, in your normal speaking voice.

In songs it is almost always the 'you' the singer is in love with; in everyday speech it also means 'she'. With strangers use คุณkun.

How to use it

เขาkǎo means he, she, him, her and even they: Thai doesn't mark gender or number, so the context tells you who is meant. It has a rising tone; with a falling tone, เข้าkâo means "to go in". เธอtoe is another word for "she", common in writing and songs.
