Downstairs in Thai

“Downstairs” in Thai is ข้างล่างkâang-lâang.

ข้างล่าง kâang-lâang

downstairs; below, down there preposition

  • kâang falling
  • lâang falling
  • Falling: start high and drop clearly, like a firm “No!”
Parts: ข้างkâang side ล่างlâang lower, bottom

How to use it

ข้างล่างkâang-lâang, "the lower side", is downstairs or below. In a condo, the shops and the 7-Eleven on the ground floor are ข้างล่างkâang-lâang. Careful with the tone: ล่างlâang falls, unlike high ล้างláang, to wash.

Don't mix it up

  • ล้างláang

    to wash, to rinse

High tone instead of falling: to wash, as in ล้างมือláang muue, wash your hands.
