How to use it

หน้าที่nâa-tîi is your duty or job, what you're responsible for. You may hear staff say ไม่ใช่หน้าที่ผมmâi châi nâa-tîi pǒm, that's not my job, and to do your duty, or to act as something, is ทำหน้าที่tam nâa-tîi.

Officials and staff are เจ้าหน้าที่jâo-nâa-tîi, literally "owners of duties". Duty in the sense of a tax on imports is a different word: ภาษีนำเข้าpaa-sǐi nam-kâo, import tax.
