Ginger in Thai

“Ginger” in Thai is ขิงkǐng.

ขิง kǐng

ginger noun

  • kǐng rising
  • Rising: start low, dip, then rise to the top, like a doubtful “Really?”

How to use it

Young ginger is shredded into stir-fries like ไก่ผัดขิงgài pàt kǐng, chicken with ginger, and sprinkled on congee and steamed fish. A hot ginger drink, น้ำขิงnáam kǐng, is the home remedy for a cold or an upset stomach.

Don't confuse it with its cousin galangal, ข่าkàa, the harder, piney root in tom yum and tom kha.
