How to use it
ซุปsúp is the borrowed word for Western soups like mushroom or corn soup, and broth is น้ำซุปnáam súp, like the little bowl that comes with chicken rice. Thai soups have their own names: แกงจืดgaeng-jùuet, a "bland curry" of clear broth with tofu, minced pork, glass noodles or vegetables, is the mild one families eat with rice; ต้มยำdtôm-yam and ต้มข่าdtôm-kàa are the spicy, sour ones.
At a noodle stall, soup is simply น้ำnáam, water: ก๋วยเตี๋ยวน้ำgǔay-dtǐaw náam is noodle soup.
