ทรมานtaw-rá-maan is to suffer badly, in body or heart: a toothache, a long illness, loving someone who doesn't love you back. With an object it's to torture or torment: ทรมานสัตว์taw-rá-maan sàt is cruelty to animals. Mind the spelling: here ทรtaw-rá is two syllables, not the s of ทรายsaai, sand.
