How to use it

Strong black tea, usually from a ready-made Thai tea mix with flavouring and the colouring that gives it its famous orange colour, sweetened with sugar and condensed milk and poured over ice. At a street stall you order ชาเย็นchaa yen, "cold tea"; ชาไทยchaa tai is the name on café menus.

The standard drink is very sweet, so ask for หวานน้อยwǎan náwy (less sweet). Without milk it's ชาดำเย็นchaa dam yen, iced black tea.
