Whole in Thai

“Whole” in Thai is ทั้งtáng.

ทั้ง táng

whole, all of (before a noun); both … and (said twice) adjective

  • táng high
  • High: start high and go a little higher, a bit tense; don’t let it fall.

How to use it

ทั้งtáng before a noun means "the whole, all of": ทั้งบ้านtáng bâan, the whole house; ทั้งปีtáng bpii, all year. With time words it's so common that ทั้งวันtáng wan, all day, is learned as one word, and ทั้งหมดtáng-mòt, "the whole lot", is the everyday "all". Said twice, it's "both … and …": ทั้งถูกทั้งอร่อยtáng tùuk táng à-ràwy, cheap and tasty, the best praise a street stall can get. Mind the tone: high ทั้งtáng; rising ถังtǎng is a bucket or a bin.

Don't mix it up

  • ถังtǎng

    bucket, bin, tank

Rising tone: a bucket or a bin.
