Unit 12 · Lesson 3 · Pattern

Can I…? Could you…? ได้ไหม

One grammar pattern, explained with examples you can hear. Read it here, then try the drills in the app.

How it works

Put ได้ไหมdâi mǎi after a verb to ask for permission or a favour, put a thing between มีmii and ไหมmǎi to ask if it's there, and ask for help with ช่วยchûay + verb + ให้หน่อยhâi nàwy.

1 Can I…?

Say what you want to do, then add ได้ไหมdâi mǎi (is it possible?): ใช้ไวไฟได้ไหมchái wai-fai dâi mǎi Can I use the wifi? ฝากกระเป๋าไว้ที่นี่ได้ไหมfàak grà-bpǎo wái tîi-nîi dâi mǎi Can I leave my bag here? You've used it for paying and checking things; it works with any verb.

ขอkǎw in front makes it softer: ขอดูห้องได้ไหมkǎw duu hâwng dâi mǎi Could I see the room? The answer is ได้dâi (yes), ได้เลยdâi loei (sure, go ahead) or ไม่ได้mâi dâi (no, you can't).

  • ใช้ cháiไวไฟ wai-faiได้ dâiไหม mǎiครับ kráp

    Can I use the wifi?

    Men ใช้ไวไฟได้ไหมครับ Women ใช้ไวไฟได้ไหมคะ

  • ขอ kǎwดู duuห้อง hâwngได้ dâiไหม mǎiครับ kráp

    Could I see the room?

    Men ขอดูห้องได้ไหมครับ Women ขอดูห้องได้ไหมคะ

  • ได้เลย dâi loei

    Sure, go ahead.

Asking and answering
You askYesNo
นั่งที่นี่ได้ไหมnâng tîi-nîi dâi mǎiได้dâi, ได้เลยdâi loeiไม่ได้mâi dâi
มีห้องว่างไหมmii hâwng wâang mǎiมีmiiไม่มีmâi mii

2 Is there…?

To ask whether something is there or available, put it between มีmii and ไหมmǎi: มีห้องว่างไหมmii hâwng wâang mǎi Do you have a room available? มีผ้าเช็ดตัวไหมmii pâa-chét-dtua mǎi Are there any towels? Answer with มีmii or ไม่มีmâi mii.

  • มี miiห้อง hâwngว่าง wâangไหม mǎiครับ kráp

  • มี miiผ้าเช็ดตัว pâa-chét-dtuaไหม mǎiครับ kráp

    Are there any towels?

    Men มีผ้าเช็ดตัวไหมครับ Women มีผ้าเช็ดตัวไหมคะ

3 Something's broken

Thing + เสียsǐa says it doesn't work, with no word for 'is': แอร์เสียae sǐa the air-con is broken, ตู้เย็นเสียdtûu-yen sǐa the fridge isn't working.

  • แอร์ aeเสีย sǐa

    The air-con is broken.

  • ตู้เย็น dtûu-yenเสีย sǐa

    The fridge isn't working.

4 Could you … for me?

To ask someone to do something for you, use ช่วยchûay + verb + ให้hâi (for me) + หน่อยnàwy: ช่วยซ่อมแอร์ให้หน่อยchûay sâwm ae hâi nàwy Could you fix the air-con for me? ช่วยดูให้หน่อยchûay duu hâi nàwy Could you take a look for me?

ให้hâi shows the favour is for you, and หน่อยnàwy keeps it light. It's the friendliest way to ask a landlord, a receptionist or a neighbour for help.

  • ช่วย chûayซ่อม sâwmแอร์ aeให้ hâiหน่อย nàwyครับ kráp

Could you fix the air-con for me?

    Men ช่วยซ่อมแอร์ให้หน่อยครับ Women ช่วยซ่อมแอร์ให้หน่อยค่ะ

  • ช่วย chûayดู duuน้ำ náamร้อน ráwnให้ hâiหน่อย nàwyครับ kráp

Could you check the hot water for me?

    Men ช่วยดูน้ำร้อนให้หน่อยครับ Women ช่วยดูน้ำร้อนให้หน่อยค่ะ

Tips

  • •ได้ไหมdâi mǎi goes at the very end, after everything else: ฝากกระเป๋าไว้ที่นี่ได้ไหมfàak grà-bpǎo wái tîi-nîi dâi mǎi.
  • •A bare ไม่ได้mâi dâi can sound blunt. Thais soften a no with ขอโทษkǎw-tôot first, or a gentle นะná after it.
  • •In everyday speech you'll often hear มั้ยmái instead of ไหมmǎi: ได้มั้ยdâi mái.
