Unit 1 · Lesson 3 · Pattern

Being polite: ครับ, ค่ะ and คะ

One grammar pattern, explained with examples you can hear. Read it here, then try the drills in the app.

How it works

Men end polite sentences with ครับkráp; women end statements with ค่ะkâ and questions with คะká.

1 Who says what

Thai makes a sentence polite with one small word at the very end. Which word depends on who is speaking, not on who you're talking to.

  • Men say ครับkráp (high tone) after everything, statements and questions alike.
  • Women say ค่ะkâ (falling tone) after statements and answers, and คะká (high tone) after questions.

You picked yours when you started (you can change it any time), and the app adds it to everything you say. The examples below are in your version.

  • สวัสดี sà-wàt-diiครับ kráp

    Hello.

    Men สวัสดีครับ Women สวัสดีค่ะ

  • สบายดี sà-baai diiไหม mǎiครับ kráp

    How are you?

    Men สบายดีไหมครับ Women สบายดีไหมคะ

Hello.สวัสดีครับsà-wàt-dii krápสวัสดีค่ะsà-wàt-dii kâ
I'm fine.สบายดีครับsà-baai dii krápสบายดีค่ะsà-baai dii kâ
How are you?สบายดีไหมครับsà-baai dii mǎi krápสบายดีไหมคะsà-baai dii mǎi ká

2 Adding warmth

นะná makes what you say softer and friendlier, a bit like a smile or an "okay?" at the end. It goes before the polite particle.

Men say นะครับná kráp. Women always say นะคะná ká, with the high คะká, even when it isn't a question: ไปก่อนนะคะbpai gàwn ná ká, never ไปก่อนนะค่ะbpai gàwn ná kâ.

  • ขอบคุณ kàwp-kunนะ náครับ kráp

    Thank you! (warmly)

    Men ขอบคุณนะครับ Women ขอบคุณนะคะ

  • ไปก่อนนะ bpai gàwn náครับ kráp

    I'm off now!

    Men ไปก่อนนะครับ Women ไปก่อนนะคะ

3 When to use one, and when not

Use a particle when you greet, thank, apologise or ask something, and with anyone you don't know well: staff, drivers, older people. Leaving it out there sounds blunt.

Quick replies like ใช่châi, โอเคoo-kee and ไม่เป็นไรmâi bpen rai are fine on their own, and close friends drop particles a lot. Adding one is never wrong: Nam says ไม่เป็นไรค่ะmâi bpen rai kâ to her customers.

On their own, ครับkráp and ค่ะkâ mean "yes" or "I'm listening". Thais say them all the time while someone else is talking.

  • โอเค oo-kee

    Okay.

  • ไม่เป็นไร mâi bpen rai

    No problem.

Tips

  • •Tones matter: ค่ะkâ falls, คะká goes up high. Mixing them up is the classic learner mistake, and Thai ears notice it at once.
  • •Don't lift your voice at the end of a question the way English does: ไหมmǎi does the asking, and the particle keeps its own tone.
