    Use it morning, noon and night, and for goodbye too; the lighter word after it is your polite particle, coming up next.

    polite particle (men); yes particle

    High tone. Men end polite statements and questions with it, and say it on its own for 'yes' or 'I'm listening'.

    • สวัสดี sà-wàt-diiครับ kráp

      Hello. (a man speaking)

    • สบายดี sà-baai diiไหม mǎiครับ kráp

      How are you? (a man asking)

  • ค่ะ kâ

    polite particle (women, statements); yes particle

    Falling tone. Women end statements and answers with it, and say it on its own for 'yes'.

      Hello. (a woman speaking)

    • สบายดี sà-baai diiค่ะ kâ

      I'm fine. (a woman answering)

  • ยินดีต้อนรับ yin-dii dtâwn-ráp

    well, fine adjective

    The answer to 'how are you?', and with ไหมmǎi after it, the question itself.

    • สบายดี sà-baai diiไหม mǎiครับ kráp

      How are you?

      Men สบายดีไหมครับ Women สบายดีไหมคะ

      I'm fine.

  • ไหม mǎi

    question word: turns a sentence into a yes/no question question word

    Spelled with a rising tone but usually said high, which is why chats spell it มั้ยmái.

  • คะ ká

    polite particle (women, questions) particle

    High tone. Women end questions with it, and switch to it after นะná.

    • สบายดี sà-baai diiไหม mǎiคะ ká

      How are you? (a woman asking)

    • โชคดี chôok-diiนะ náคะ ká

      Good luck! (a woman speaking)

  • เชิญ choen

    please, go ahead (inviting someone in or to sit) verb

    Said with an open hand: come in, have a seat, after you, or please start eating.

      After you. (holding the door)

      Men เชิญครับ Women เชิญค่ะ

  • ไหว้ wâai

    to wai (greet with palms together); the wai verb

    Palms together, fingers up, a small bow of the head: the higher the hands, the deeper the respect.

    • ไหว้ wâaiสวัสดี sà-wàt-dii

      Say hello with a wai.
