Where things are: อยู่

How it works
1 Saying where something is
อยู่yùu means 'is (located)'. Put the thing first, then อยู่yùu, then where it is: ร้านขายยาอยู่ข้างหน้าráan-kǎai-yaa yùu kâang-nâa (the pharmacy is up ahead).
Add a landmark straight after the location word, with no 'of' or 'the': อยู่ตรงข้ามเซเว่นyùu dtrong-kâam see-wên (it's opposite the 7-Eleven), อยู่ข้างๆ ตลาดyùu kâang-kâang dtà-làat (it's next to the market).
- ร้านขายยา ráan-kǎai-yaaอยู่ yùuข้างหน้า kâang-nâa
The pharmacy is up ahead.
- ธนาคาร tá-naa-kaanอยู่ yùuตรงข้าม dtrong-kâamเซเว่น see-wên
The bank is opposite the 7-Eleven.
- อยู่ yùuข้างๆ kâang-kâangตลาด dtà-làat
It's next to the market.

2 Floors, sides and areas
Floors and sides need no extra word: อยู่ชั้นสองyùu chán sǎwng (it's on the second floor), อยู่ทางซ้ายyùu taang sáai (it's on the left). For an area or a city, you can add ที่tîi (at): อยู่ที่สุขุมวิทyùu tîi sù-kǔm-wít (it's on Sukhumvit).
The same อยู่yùu also means 'live, stay': อยู่คอนโดyùu kawn-doo (I live in a condo).
- อยู่ yùuชั้น chánสอง sǎwng
It's on the second floor.
- อยู่ yùuทาง taangขวา kwǎa
It's on the right.
- ผม pǒmอยู่ yùuที่ tîiสุขุมวิท sù-kǔm-wít
I live on Sukhumvit.
Men ผมอยู่ที่สุขุมวิท Women ฉันอยู่ที่สุขุมวิท
3 Asking and answering
The question word goes where the answer would go: ห้องน้ำอยู่ที่ไหนhâwng-náam yùu tîi-nǎi (where's the bathroom?), อยู่ชั้นไหนyùu chán nǎi (which floor is it on?). Ask ไกลไหมglai mǎi or ใกล้ไหมglâi mǎi for far or near. Short answers are normal: ไม่ไกลmâi glai (not far), ใกล้ๆglâi-glâi (close by), อยู่ตรงนี้yùu dtrong-níi (it's right here).
One trap: อยู่yùu is only for location. 'The pharmacy is open' is just ร้านขายยาเปิดráan-kǎai-yaa bpòet, with no อยู่yùu.

Men อยู่ชั้นไหนครับ Women อยู่ชั้นไหนคะ
- ใกล้ๆ glâi-glâi
It's close by.
Tips
- •Thais give directions by landmarks, so listen for เซเว่นsee-wên, ธนาคารtá-naa-kaan or ตลาดdtà-làat rather than street names.
- •Mixing up ใกล้glâi (near) and ไกลglai (far)? Listen for the drop: ใกล้glâi falls, ไกลglai stays level.
- •Didn't catch the answer? ช่วยชี้ทางหน่อยchûay chíi taang nàwy gets anyone to point the way.
