Key lines, explained

Tap a line to hear it. Once the video is playing, lines jump to their moment in the song.

  1. ฉัน chǎnเข้าใจ kâo-jaiว่า wâaรัก rákของ kǎwngเรา raoคง kongเป็นไปไม่ได้ bpen bpai mâi dâi

I understand that our love is probably impossible.

The song's first words. เข้าใจว่าkâo-jai wâa = to understand that… คงkong = probably, most likely: คงไม่มาkong mâi maa = he's probably not coming. เป็นไปไม่ได้bpen bpai mâi dâi = impossible, literally 'can't come to be'; its opposite is เป็นไปได้bpen bpai dâi, possible. รักของเราrák kǎwng rao = our love: ของkǎwng (of) puts the owner after the thing. Men sing ฉันchǎn (I) too: in songs it is everyone's 'I', though a man says ผมpǒm when he talks.
  2. ต่อให้ dtàw-hâiทุ่มเท tûm-teeทุกอย่าง túk yàangซักเท่าไร sák tâo-rai

However much I give it my all…

ต่อให้dtàw-hâi = even if, no matter how; with เท่าไรtâo-rai (how much) after the verb it means however much: ต่อให้รอนานเท่าไรdtàw-hâi raw naan tâo-rai = however long I wait. ทุ่มเทtûm-tee = to devote yourself, to give your all (ทุ่มtûm = to throw down, เทtee = to pour out). ซักsák is the spoken spelling of สักsàk, (just) some, here 'at all'. The sentence ends in the next line: he probably can't change her heart.
  3. เป็นห่วง bpen-hùangเธอ toeในยาม nai yaamเธอ toeเหงา ngǎoใจ jai

    …to worry about you whenever you're lonely…

It follows 'just to be there to look after you'. เป็นห่วงbpen-hùang = to worry about someone you love: เป็นห่วงนะbpen-hùang ná = I worry about you, take care, a very Thai way to show you care. ในยามnai yaam = in times of, when, a written word; in speech it's เวลาwee-laa or ตอนdtawn: เวลาเธอเหงาwee-laa toe ngǎo = when you're lonely. เหงาใจngǎo jai, 'lonely at heart', is the song form of เหงาngǎo, lonely: เหงาจังngǎo jang = I'm so lonely. The next line ends the thought: being there for you is enough for me.
  4. แค่ kâeขอ kǎwฉัน chǎnเป็น bpenเพียง piangพระเอก prá-èekจำลอง jam-lawng

All I ask is to be just a stand-in leading man.

The title line. พระเอกprá-èek is the leading man of a film or TV drama (the leading lady is นางเอกnaang-èek), and in everyday talk a real-life hero. จำลองjam-lawng = a model, a replica, something made to copy the real thing: แบบจำลองbàep jam-lawng = a scale model. So พระเอกจำลองprá-èek jam-lawng is a stand-in hero, a copy of the real one. ขอkǎw + verb = let me…, may I…: ขอไปด้วยkǎw bpai dûay = can I come too? เพียงpiang = only, just, the written แค่kâe.
  5. เป็น bpenเพียง piangแค่ kâeพระรอง prá-rawngที่ tîiเธอ toeมอง mawngไม่ mâiเห็น hěn

Just the second lead you don't see.

พระรองprá-rawng is the second male lead of a drama (รองrawng = second, deputy): the kind one who loves the heroine and, as the convention goes, rarely wins her. เพียงแค่piang kâe puts two words for 'only' together for weight. Verb + ไม่เห็นmâi hěn = can't see, doesn't see: มองไม่เห็นmawng mâi hěn = to look and not see, not to notice; มองเห็นmawng hěn = to see, to make out. ที่tîi joins the description to พระรองprá-rawng: the second lead that you don't see.

Grammar in this song

However much: ต่อให้dtàw-hâi … เท่าไรtâo-rai. ต่อให้dtàw-hâi (even if) opens the clause and เท่าไรtâo-rai (how much) after the verb turns it into however much: ต่อให้ทุ่มเททุกอย่างซักเท่าไรdtàw-hâi tûm-tee túk yàang sák tâo-rai (however much I give it my all), ต่อให้แพงเท่าไรก็จะซื้อdtàw-hâi paeng tâo-rai gâw jà súue (however expensive it is, I'll buy it). The second half usually starts with ก็gâw.

When: เวลาwee-laa + clause (in writing, ในยามnai yaam). เวลาwee-laa, time, before a clause means when, whenever: เวลาเธอเหงาwee-laa toe ngǎo (when you're lonely), เวลาว่างทำอะไรwee-laa wâang tam à-rai (what do you do when you're free?). Songs and writing use ในยามnai yaam, 'in the hour of'.

The roles of a Thai drama. พระเอกprá-èek (leading man), นางเอกnaang-èek (leading lady), พระรองprá-rawng (second male lead) and นางร้ายnaang-ráai (the female villain), words Thais use about real life too: เขาเป็นพระเอกของฉันkǎo bpen prá-èek kǎwng chǎn (he's my hero).

The culture behind it

"พระเอกจำลองprá-èek jam-lawng" (Fake Protagonist) is the end theme of Theory of Love (ทฤษฎีจีบเธอtrít-sà-dii jìip toe), a GMMTV series of 2019 based on a novel by JittiRain: Third (Gun Atthaphan), a film student, has loved his best friend Khai (Off Jumpol) for three years, and decides to stop. It aired on GMM 25 and LINE TV from 1 June to 17 August 2019. Getsunova's Panoth Khunprasert wrote the words and music; the band, also behind How Far Is Close?, arranged it, and Off (Poonsak Jaturaboon) of the band Big Ass produced it, for White Music, a GMM Grammy label. The video's description sums it up: the role of someone who loves in secret and can never replace 'the real one'.

Its words come from Thai TV drama, ละครlá-kawn. Every drama has its พระเอกprá-èek and นางเอกnaang-èek, the leading man and lady, and very often a พระรองprá-rawng, the second lead who is always there for the heroine while she looks the other way. Calling yourself a stand-in hero, or the second lead nobody sees, is the song's way of saying: I know I'm not the one, and I'll stay anyway.
