What the song is about
พื้นที่ทับซ้อนpúuen-tîi táp-sáwn, “Phuen Thi Thap Son (Overlapping Territory)”, is a luk thung song by Jintara Poonlarp x Kratai Pannipa (2019). A heartbreak duet between Jintara Poonlarp, the queen of Isan country music, and the teenage star Kratai Pannipa, about a woman who finds she is sharing her man with someone else. Its title borrows a phrase from the news, and its lines mix everyday Isan (not, we) with useful Central Thai for accepting what you can't change.

Key lines, explained

- ห้าม hâamน้ำตา náam-dtaaบ่ bàwได้ dâi
I can't hold back my tears.
ห้ามhâam = to forbid, to stop someone or something: ห้ามจอดhâam jàwt = no parking. With tears it means to hold them back. Isan บ่bàw = ไม่mâi (not), so บ่ได้bàw dâi = ไม่ได้mâi dâi, can't: Thai puts 'can' after the verb and its object. - ต้อง dtâwngทำใจ tam-jaiยอมรับ yawm-ráp
I have to come to terms with it and accept it.
ทำใจtam-jai (literally 'make the heart') = to come to terms with something painful; friends say ทำใจนะtam-jai ná to comfort you after a loss. ยอมรับyawm-ráp = to accept, to admit (ยอมyawm = to give in, รับráp = to receive). ต้องdtâwng + verb = to have to. - แต่ dtàeเมื่อ mûeaที่ tîiคำ kamว่า wâaเรา raoบ่ bàwได้ dâiมี miiแค่ kâeเฮา hao
But once 'us' no longer means just the two of us…
Kratai's line plays with two words for 'we': Central เราrao and Isan เฮาhao. Isan often says ฮ นกฮูกhaw nók-hûuk where Central Thai says ร เรือraw ruea: ฮักhák = รักrák, love. คำว่าkam wâa + word = the word '…'. บ่ได้bàw dâi + verb = isn't really, doesn't. แค่kâe = only, just. เมื่อmûea = when; the ที่tîi after it is extra, and in speech you'd say just เมื่อmûea or พอpaw. - พื้นที่ púuen-tîiทับซ้อน táp-sáwnซ่อน sâwnใจ jai
Overlapping territory; I keep my heart hidden.
พื้นที่púuen-tîi = area, space (พื้นที่จอดรถpúuen-tîi jàwt rót = parking area); ทับซ้อนtáp-sáwn = to overlap (ทับtáp = to lie on top of, ซ้อนsáwn = to stack). Listen to the tones: ซ้อนsáwn (high, to stack) and ซ่อนsâwn (falling, to hide) differ only in tone, and the song sets them side by side. - ติดที่ dtìt-tîiอ้าย âaiนั้น nánกลายเป็น glaai-bpenของ kǎwngเขา kǎo
The only trouble is, you've become hers.
ติดที่dtìt-tîi = the only trouble is (ติดdtìt = to be stuck), very common in speech: ติดที่ว่าdtìt-tîi wâa… = the snag is that… Isan อ้ายâai (older brother) is what a woman calls her man, and นั้นnán (that) after him points back at him. กลายเป็นglaai-bpen = to become, to turn into; ของเขาkǎwng kǎo = hers (or his).

Grammar in this song
Can't: verb + object + ไม่ได้mâi dâi. Thai puts 'can' at the end: ห้ามน้ำตาบ่ได้hâam náam-dtaa bàw dâi = can't hold back the tears, กินเผ็ดไม่ได้gin pèt mâi dâi = I can't eat spicy food. Isan บ่bàw simply takes the place of ไม่mâi.
Isan next to Central Thai. The song mixes both, and the swaps are regular: เฮาhao = เราrao (we), ฮักhák = รักrák (love), บ่bàw = ไม่mâi (not), and อ้ายâai = พี่pîi for the man she loves. Central words such as ต้องdtâwng, ยอมรับyawm-ráp and กลายเป็นglaai-bpen stay as they are.
The culture behind it
Jintara Poonlarp, born in 1969 in Roi Et, is called the queen of luk thung and mor lam: her 1989 album Phalang Rak sold more than two million cassettes, and in 2019 she was honoured as an Isan heritage artist. Kratai Pannipa, from Loei, was then a teenager making her name in Isan luk thung indie, the independent scene that releases its songs straight to YouTube. The two released this duet on Jintara's own channel in July 2019; Ramil Tonkaew wrote the words and music. Jintara's other song in this library is เต่างอยdtào-ngawy.
The title is a phrase from maps and the news: พื้นที่ทับซ้อนpúuen-tîi táp-sáwn is land or sea that two sides both claim. Here the disputed ground is a man's heart, and the two voices tell one woman's story: she was there first and now has to step aside. Luk thung loves this story of the มือที่สามmuue tîi sǎam ('the third hand'), the other woman or man who comes between a couple.
