Jai Pen Nai Kai Pen Bao (ใจเป็นนาย กายเป็นบ่าว): meaning and key lines

Lek Ratchametเล็ก รัชเมศฐ์

What the song is about

ใจเป็นนาย กายเป็นบ่าวjai bpen naai gaai bpen bàao, “Jai Pen Nai Kai Pen Bao (The Heart Is Master, the Body Its Servant)”, is a Thai rock song by Lek Ratchamet (2024). A folk-rock ballad that topped the charts in Thailand and trended in Laos: a man whose brain wants to forget a lost love while his heart, the master, won't let it. Its title turns an old saying about the mind and the body into a love song, and its lines teach 'still', 'try', 'in the end', 'not a single thing' and a handful of poetic words every Thai song uses.

Key lines, explained

Tap a line to hear it. Once the video is playing, lines jump to their moment in the song.

  1. ตา dtaaที่ tîiยังคง yang-kongบอด bàwtเพราะ práwคำ kamว่า wâaรัก rák

Eyes still blinded by the word 'love'.

The song opens with a list of what is left of him: eyes, then a body. ตาdtaa = eye, eyes; บอดbàwt = blind: ตาบอดdtaa bàwt = blind. ที่tîi = that, which: ตาที่ยังคงบอดdtaa tîi yang-kong bàwt = eyes that are still blind. ยังคงyang-kong = still, a more formal ยังyang. คำว่าkam wâa + X = the word X. The saying ความรักทำให้คนตาบอดkwaam-rák tam-hâi kon dtaa-bàwt means love makes people blind.
  2. ร่าง râangก็ gâwเป็น bpenได้ dâiแค่บ่าว kâe bàao

My body can only be a servant…

Here is the title's idea. ร่างrâang = the body, a figure (a poetic word; everyday Thai says ร่างกายrâang-gaai). เป็นได้แค่bpen dâi kâe + noun = can only be: เป็นได้แค่เพื่อนbpen dâi kâe pûean = we can only be friends. บ่าวbàao here is a servant, its old Central Thai meaning; in Isan บ่าวbàao is a young man. The next line lets the heart give the orders.
  3. สมอง sà-mǎwngต้องการ dtâwng-gaanจะ jàลืม luuemเธอ toeไป bpaiแต่ dtàeใจ jaiฉัน chǎn

My brain wants to forget you, but my heart…

The chorus: brain against heart. สมองsà-mǎwng = brain. ต้องการdtâwng-gaan = to want, to need; ต้องการจะdtâwng-gaan jà + verb = to want to (a bit formal; everyday Thai says อยากyàak). ลืมluuem = to forget; ไปbpai after it adds 'and let go'. ใจjai = heart, mind: ใจฉันjai chǎn = my heart. Men sing ฉันchǎn too: in songs it is everyone's 'I'.
  4. ยัง yangคอย kawyสั่งให้ sàng hâiมี miiเพียง piangเธอ toeเสมอ sà-mǒe

…still keeps telling me there's only you, always.

ยังyang = still. คอยkawy + verb = to keep doing it, to be always there doing it. สั่งsàng = to order, to command (and to order food), so สั่งให้sàng hâi + verb = to tell someone to do it, as an order: here the heart is the master. มีเพียงเธอmii piang toe = to have only you (เพียงpiang = only, a written แค่kâe). เสมอsà-mǒe = always.
  5. แต่ dtàeฝัน fǎnของ kǎwngเรา raoไม่ mâiเท่ากัน tâo-gan

But our dreams weren't the same size.

The line before calls her the great love he once dreamed of. ฝันfǎn = a dream; to dream. ของเราkǎwng rao = our. เท่ากันtâo-gan = equal, the same (amount, size, price): ไม่เท่ากันmâi tâo-gan = not equal: one of them dreamed bigger than the other. ราคาเท่ากันraa-kaa tâo-gan = the same price.
  6. สุดท้าย sùt-táaiทำ tamไม่ mâiได้ dâiสักอย่าง sàk yàang

In the end, I couldn't do any of it.

Before this he tries two things: throwing away her framed photo and starting over with someone new. สุดท้ายsùt-táai = in the end, finally. Verb + ไม่ได้mâi dâi = can't, couldn't. สักอย่างsàk yàang after a negative = not a single thing, not one of them: ไม่ได้กินอะไรสักอย่างmâi dâi gin à-rai sàk yàang = I haven't eaten a thing.
  7. กาย gaaiที่ tîiฝืน fǔuenไม่ mâiได้ dâi

    A body that can't fight it…

กายgaai = the body, the word in the title: ใจเป็นนายกายเป็นบ่าวjai bpen naai gaai bpen bàao. ฝืนfǔuen = to go against something, to force yourself: ฝืนใจfǔuen jai = to do it against your will, ฝืนยิ้มfǔuen yím = to force a smile. ฝืนไม่ได้fǔuen mâi dâi = can't fight it. The bridge goes on: the body must keep serving the heart.

Grammar in this song

Can only be, still, keep on. เป็นได้แค่bpen dâi kâe + noun = can only be: ร่างก็เป็นได้แค่บ่าวrâang gâw bpen dâi kâe bàao. ยังyang + verb = still: ยังรักอยู่yang rák yùu = still in love. คอยkawy + verb = to keep doing it, always there to do it: คอยห่วงkawy hùang = to keep worrying (about someone).

Not a single one. สักsàk + counting word after a negative = not even one: สักอย่างsàk yàang (not a single thing), สักคนsàk kon (not one person), สักคำsàk kam (not a word): ไม่พูดสักคำmâi pûut sàk kam = he didn't say a word.

Want, in two registers. อยากyàak + verb is everyday 'want to'; ต้องการdtâwng-gaan is more formal, and also means 'to need': ต้องการความช่วยเหลือdtâwng-gaan kwaam chûay-lǔea = to need help. Songs mix registers freely: สมองต้องการจะลืมsà-mǎwng dtâwng-gaan jà luuem sounds like a report on his own brain.

The culture behind it

The saying. ใจเป็นนายกายเป็นบ่าวjai bpen naai gaai bpen bàao is a well-known Thai saying: the mind is the master and the body is its servant. In a 1978 talk published by Dhammathai, Somdet Phra Ñāṇasaṃvara, later Thailand's Supreme Patriarch, explained it: the mind gives the orders and the body carries them out, which is why Buddhism puts training the mind first. The song turns it round: his heart is the master, and it won't let him forget. (นายnaai here is a master or a boss, not 'Mr', and บ่าวbàao a servant, not the Isan 'young man'.)

The singer. Lek Ratchamet grew up the son of a fisherman in Phetchaburi and worked on his father's boat before he won the 2018–19 season of The Voice Thailand. After a slow start he joined Genie Records, the rock label of GMM Grammy, and took a new name, Ratchamet, his third (he told The People). This was his second single there, released on 18 November 2024. The label's executive Tom Nattaphon Mukkhan brought the story, a real one from someone close to him, and directed the video in Chanthaburi; the credits name Jaruphan Srimuangklang as the writer. The song was a popular sound on TikTok before it came out, trended at number one for music on YouTube in both Thailand and Laos (Thai Post), and in January 2025 it reached number one on The Official Thailand Chart (Naewna).
