Jai Sang Ma (ใจสั่งมา): meaning and key lines
Losoโลโซ
What the song is about
ใจสั่งมาjai sàng maa, “Jai Sang Ma (My Heart Told Me To)”, is a Thai rock song by Loso (1999). One of Loso's most famous songs, a slow one: a guy who kept phoning a girl who never liked him back sings her an apology instead. It's not his fault, his heart told him to. Its lines teach if, had no idea, don't be angry, one more time and the sweet old words Thai love songs use: my dear, my wretched heart, a man's word.

- หาก hàakว่า wâaเธอ toeผ่าน pàanมา maaได้ยิน dâi-yinเพลง pleengนี้ níi
If you happen to pass by and hear this song
หากhàak = if, the written, more formal word for ถ้าtâa; หากว่าhàak wâa means the same. ผ่านมาpàan maa = to pass by, to come past. ได้ยินdâi-yin = to hear, a sound reaching you; ฟังfang is to listen. เพลงนี้pleeng níi = this song: นี้níi comes after the noun. The next line says she'll surely know who it's from. - แต่ dtàeใจ jaiเจ้ากรรม jâo-gamไม่ mâiรู้ rúuเลย loeiว่า wâaเธอ toeไม่ mâiชอบ châwpเรา rao
But my wretched heart had no idea that you didn't like me
ใจเจ้ากรรมjai jâo-gam = this wretched heart of mine: เจ้ากรรมjâo-gam, from กรรมgam (karma), is what you call something that keeps getting you into trouble, as if fate sent it: รถเจ้ากรรมrót jâo-gam = this wretched car. ไม่รู้เลยmâi rúu loei = had no idea at all (เลยloei after a negative = at all). ว่าwâa = that. เราrao is 'we', but in songs and between couples it often means 'I, me': ไม่ชอบเราmâi châwp rao = doesn't like me. - ไอ้ âiสิ่ง sìngที่ tîiฉัน chǎnทำ tamลงไป long bpaiใจ jaiสั่ง sàngมา maa
All the things I did, my heart told me to
The title line. ไอ้âi in front of a thing is casual and a bit rough, a spoken way of pointing at it: ไอ้สิ่งที่ฉันทำâi sìng tîi chǎn tam = all this stuff I did. In front of a man's name or an insult, ไอ้âi is rude. ทำลงไปtam long bpai = to go ahead and do it (and now it's done). สั่งsàng = to order, food in a restaurant and also a command: ใจสั่งมาjai sàng maa = my heart gave the order, มาmaa showing it came to him. So it isn't his fault. - อย่า yàaโกรธ gròotเลย loeiนะ náคนดี kon-dii
Don't be angry, my dear
อย่าyàa + verb + เลยloei = please don't…, said gently: อย่าโกรธเลยนะyàa gròot loei ná = don't be angry, okay? Without เลยloei it sounds more like an order. โกรธgròot = angry. คนดีkon-dii = my dear, literally 'good person', an old-fashioned endearment of songs. The rest of the line asks her to forgive him (ยกโทษyók-tôot = to forgive), calling her แก้วตาgâew-dtaa, the apple of his eye, and the next line promises he won't come round or call again. - อยาก yàakจะ jàมอง mawngจะ jàมอง mawngหน้า nâaเธอ toeอีกสักที ìik sàk tii
I want to look at your face just one more time
อยากจะyàak jà + verb = to want to (จะjà only adds rhythm here). He sings จะมองjà mawng twice, as if he can't help himself. มองหน้าmawng nâa = to look someone in the face (หน้าnâa = face). อีกสักทีìik sàk tii = one more time, just once more: ขอดูอีกสักทีkǎw duu ìik sàk tii = let me see it once more. The next line says why: he wants one last look before he says goodbye to the heartless beauty (ใจดำjai-dam = heartless). - คำพูด kam-pûutลูกผู้ชาย lûuk-pûu-chaaiฉัน chǎnชอบ châwpเธอ toe
On my word as a man: I like you
The last line before the final chorus: the one word still stuck inside him. คำพูดkam-pûut = words, what someone says. ลูกผู้ชายlûuk-pûu-chaai = a real man, a man of honour (ผู้ชายpûu-chaai = man): คำพูดลูกผู้ชายkam-pûut lûuk-pûu-chaai = a man's word, a promise he keeps. ฉันชอบเธอchǎn châwp toe = I like you: ชอบchâwp (to like) is how a crush is confessed; รักrák (to love) is a much bigger word.

Grammar in this song
อย่าyàa + verb + เลยloei (นะná) = please don't…, softly: อย่าโกรธเลยนะyàa gròot loei ná, อย่าร้องไห้เลยyàa ráwng-hâai loei (don't cry). Plain อย่าyàa + verb is firmer: อย่าลืมyàa luuem = don't forget. หากhàak / ถ้าtâa = if: หากhàak belongs to songs, letters and announcements, ถ้าtâa to everyday talk: ถ้าว่างโทรมานะtâa wâang too maa ná = call me if you're free.
Verb + ลงไปlong bpai = to go ahead and do it, often something you can't take back: ทำลงไปแล้วtam long bpai láew = it's done now. And เราrao (we) often means 'I' between couples and friends, a softer word than ฉันchǎn or ผมpǒm.
The culture behind it
Loso's singer and songwriter Sek Loso (Seksan Sukpimai) wrote both the words and the music of "ใจสั่งมาjai sàng maa". It comes from the band's third album, Rock & Roll (7 October 1999, on Asanee Chotikul's More Music label, distributed by GMM Grammy), which they recorded as a duo, Sek and drummer Yai, after their bassist left; it sold about 1.46 million copies. Thai Wikipedia counts the song among Loso's most famous and best-received. Its video went up on GMM Grammy's YouTube channel in 2014 and opens with her answering machine: she isn't home, please leave a message.
The song is a classic Thai way of saying sorry: it explains that the heart, ใจjai, did it. Thai talks about feelings through ใจjai all the time: ใจดีjai-dii (kind), ใจดำjai-dam (heartless, literally 'black-hearted'), ใจเย็นjai-yen (calm). And ชอบchâwp (to like) is the word for a crush: a Thai confession of love usually starts with ชอบchâwp, not รักrák.
