Key lines, explained

Tap a line to hear it. Once the video is playing, lines jump to their moment in the song.

I'm lucky that you came into my life to hold me steady.

Isan love songs have their own 'I' and 'you': อ้ายâai (older brother) is the man, เจ้าjâo is his love, where Central Thai says พี่pîi and น้องnáwng. โชคดีที่chôok-dii tîi + clause = lucky that… เข้ามาkâo maa = to come in, here into his life. ประคองbprà-kawng = to hold someone steady, as you help a person who can't walk alone.

The longer we're together, the surer I am of the word 'love'.

    ยิ่งyîng … เท่าไรtâo-rai ก็ยิ่งgâw yîng … = the more…, the more…: ยิ่งนานเท่าไรก็ยิ่งมั่นใจyîng naan tâo-rai gâw yîng mân-jai = the longer it lasts, the surer I am. มั่นใจmân-jai = sure, confident. ในคำว่าnai kam wâa + word = in the word '…'. Isan ฮักhák = รักrák, love.

May the thread of fate hold tight and pull.

ให้hâi at the start of a wish = may…, let…, as in ขอให้โชคดีkǎw-hâi chôok-dii (good luck to you). Isan สายแนนsǎai-naen = the thread of fate that ties two people who were partners in past lives: a soulmate. เพิ่นpôen is the Isan respectful 'he, she, they'; here it points back to the thread of fate. จ่องjàwng = to hold on to, to cling to (Isan), น้าวnáao = to pull, to bend, as you bend a bow.

In this life we got to meet.

Isan ซาติsâat = Central ชาติchâat, a lifetime (Isan says ซ โซ่saw sôo where Central Thai says ช ช้างchaw cháang): ชาตินี้châat níi = this life, ชาติหน้าchâat-nâa = the next one. Isan เฮาhao = เราrao, we. ได้dâi + verb = got to, had the chance to. พบเจอpóp joe = to meet: formal พบpóp and everyday เจอjoe side by side, a common way to make a pair of words.

Loving and cherishing each other forever.

Isan ฮักแพงhák-paeng = to love and cherish. Careful: in Central Thai แพงpaeng means expensive, but in Isan it means dear, precious (as in คำแพงkam-paeng, my precious one), so ฮักhák + แพงpaeng is 'love dearly'. Verb + กันgan = each other. ตลอดไปdtà-làwt bpai = forever.

    May merit lead our hearts.

The title line. บุญbun = merit, the good you build up by kind deeds and gifts to the temple; Thais believe it shapes this life and the next. นำพาnam-paa = to lead, to guide (นำnam = to lead, พาpaa = to take along). ให้hâi + someone + verb = may…: ให้บุญนำพาhâi bun nam-paa = may merit lead the way.

The more…, the more…: ยิ่งyîng … ก็ยิ่งgâw yîng … Put ยิ่งyîng before both halves: ยิ่งนานเท่าไรก็ยิ่งมั่นใจyîng naan tâo-rai gâw yîng mân-jai = the longer, the surer; ยิ่งฝึกยิ่งเก่งyîng fùek yîng gèng = the more you practise, the better you get. เท่าไรtâo-rai (how much) after the first part means 'however much'.

Wishes with ให้hâi. A wish starts with ขอให้kǎw-hâi or just ให้hâi, then who and what: ขอให้มีความสุขkǎw-hâi mii kwaam-sùk = may you be happy, ให้บุญนำพาhâi bun nam-paa = may merit lead the way.

The culture behind it

Merit and fate. บุญbun is merit: the good you build up by being kind, giving food to monks and helping at the temple. Many Thais believe it carries over from life to life, so a happy couple can be the fruit of merit two people made together long ago. Isan calls that bond สายแนนsǎai-naen, the thread of fate between souls who have been partners before; Central Thai says บุพเพสันนิวาสbùp-pee-sǎn-ní-wâat, the title of the hit drama Love Destiny. The video tells a farming couple's story and ends at their village wedding, where the bride price is laid out and elders tie white cotton threads round the couple's wrists as a blessing.

Maithai Huajaisin, born in 1968 in Nakhon Ratchasima, began in 1984 as the leading man of travelling mor lam troupes, and his nickname is still พระเอกใหญ่prá-èek yài, 'the big leading man'. After hits with the Topline and Grammy Gold labels he has been independent since 2021. Ta Mister Khaen wrote this song, which came out on Maithai's own channel in December 2024.
