Sudpang! (สุดปัง): meaning and key lines

MILLIมิลลิ

What the song is about

สุดปังsùt bpang, “Sudpang! (Totally Awesome)”, is a Thai rap song by MILLI (2020). MILLI's second single: a marching-band anthem for every kind of beauty. She raps in Central Thai, Northern Thai, Isan and Southern Thai, adds Japanese, English and the kathoey word game Luu, and says that beauty doesn't come from one region or one look. The lines give you a fun first taste of Isan and easy everyday words: left, right, ears, eyes, face, mirror, dream, beauty, and how to say you're not that pretty but sassy.

Key lines, explained

Tap a line to hear it. Once the video is playing, lines jump to their moment in the song.

  1. เดิน doenและ láeเดิน doenและ láeเดิน doenเดิน doenเดิน doenเดิน doenย่ำ yâmซ้าย sáaiขวา kwǎa

Walk, and walk, and walk, walk, walk, walk; march, left, right.

The song starts like a drum major leading a school marching band. เดินdoen = to walk. และláe = and, a word of writing and songs; in speech Thais link with กับgàp or แล้วก็láew gâw. ย่ำyâm = to tread, to stamp along: ย่ำเท้าyâm táao = to mark time. ซ้ายsáai = left, ขวาkwǎa = right: เลี้ยวซ้ายlíaw sáai = turn left. Then she switches to English and dance moves.
  2. สุดปัง sùt bpangปัง bpangปังปะรังปังปี้ bpang-bpà-rang-bpang-bpîi

    Totally fab, fab, bang-ba-rang-bang-bee!

The chorus and the title. ปังbpang, 'bang!', is slang for a hit, something amazing: เพลงนี้ปังมากpleeng níi bpang mâak = this song is a huge hit, สวยปังsǔay bpang = stunning. สุดsùt = the most, the utmost; before a word in slang it means totally, super: สุดปังsùt bpang = totally amazing, like สุดยอดsùt-yâwt = excellent. The rest is a made-up chant on ปังbpang. The chorus ends by calling out to the whole stadium with มึงmueng, the rough 'you'.
  3. สวย sǔayดู duuที่ tîiหู hǔuดู duuที่ tîiตา dtaaดู duuทั้ง tángหน้า nâaอ่ะ àสวย sǔay

Pretty: look at the ears, look at the eyes, look at the whole face, so pretty.

ดูที่duu tîi + a place or a part = to look at…: ดูที่หูduu tîi hǔu = look at the ears, ดูที่ตาduu tîi dtaa = look at the eyes. ทั้งtáng + noun = the whole…: ทั้งหน้าtáng nâa = the whole face, ทั้งวันtáng wan = all day. สวยsǔay = beautiful, pretty. อ่ะà is a casual little particle. She raps it so fast that ดูที่duu tîi comes out almost like ดูดิduu dì, 'look!'.
  4. กระจก grà-jòkกระจก grà-jòkบอก bàwkข้อย kâwyแหน่ nàeไผ pǎiงาม ngaamสุด sùtใน naiแดนนี้ daen níi

Mirror, mirror, tell me: who's the fairest in this land?

Snow White's question, in Isan, the language of the Northeast. กระจกgrà-jòk = mirror (and glass); she calls out the first one. ข้อยkâwy = I, me (Central Thai ฉันchǎn or ผมpǒm), and แหน่nàe softens a request like Central หน่อยnàwy: บอกข้อยแหน่bàwk kâwy nàe = tell me, would you. ไผpǎi = who (Central ใครkrai). งามngaam = beautiful, everyday in Isan and the North but literary in Central Thai, which says สวยsǔay. สุดsùt after an adjective = the most: งามสุดngaam sùt = the most beautiful. แดนนี้daen níi = this land. The romanization follows the Thai spelling; real Isan tones differ.
  5. ฝัน fǎnที่ tîiเคย koeiฝัน fǎnว่า wâaอยาก yàakสวย sǔayอย่าง yàangที่ tîiหวัง wǎng

The dream I always had, of being as pretty as I hoped,

ฝันfǎn = a dream, to dream: ฝันที่เคยฝันfǎn tîi koei fǎn = the dream I used to dream (เคยkoei + verb = used to, have ever). ฝันว่าfǎn wâa = to dream that. อยากสวยyàak sǔay = to want to be pretty: an adjective works as a verb in Thai, with no 'be'. อย่างที่yàang tîi + verb = as…: อย่างที่หวังyàang tîi wǎng = as I hoped, อย่างที่บอกyàang tîi bàwk = as I said.
  6. ดั่ง dàngนางฟ้า naang-fáaนางสวรรค์ naang sà-wǎnคิด kítว่า wâaคง kongได้ dâiแค่ kâeฝัน fǎn

like an angel, a goddess: I thought I could only dream of it.

ดั่งdàng = like, as: a word of songs and poems (everyday Thai says เหมือนmǔean). นางฟ้าnaang-fáa = an angel, a fairy (literally 'lady of the sky'), and นางสวรรค์naang sà-wǎn = a heavenly maiden (สวรรค์sà-wǎn = heaven). คิดว่าkít wâa = to think that. คงkong = probably; ได้แค่dâi kâe + verb = can only: คงได้แค่ฝันkong dâi kâe fǎn = could probably only dream. Then she turns it round: she looks in the mirror and finds she's fab after all.
  7. ความสวย kwaam-sǔayคนเรา kon raoมัน manไม่ mâiเคย koeiมี miiจำกัด jam-gàt

There's never been a limit to our beauty.

The message of the song. ความสวยkwaam-sǔay = beauty: ความkwaam + adjective makes a noun, like beauty from beautiful. คนเราkon rao = people, us humans: ความสวยคนเราkwaam-sǔay kon rao = people's beauty, with ของkǎwng (of) left out. ไม่เคยmâi koei + verb = never: ไม่เคยมีmâi koei mii = has never had. จำกัดjam-gàt = limited, a limit: ไม่จำกัดmâi jam-gàt = unlimited. Just before, she says she doesn't care about beauty standards.
  8. หนู nǔuไม่ mâiสวย sǔayมาก mâakหรอก ràwkพี่ pîiแต่ dtàeเรื่อง rûeangแซ่บ sâepนี่ nîiถนัด tà-nàt

I'm not all that pretty, sis, but sass is my thing.

หนูnǔu, 'mouse', is how a girl or young woman says 'I' to someone older, here the listener she calls พี่pîi (older sister or brother). ไม่…หรอกmâi … ràwk = not really, not that…: ไม่สวยมากหรอกmâi sǔay mâak ràwk = I'm not that pretty. เรื่องrûeang + something + นี่nîi = when it comes to…: เรื่องกินนี่rûeang gin nîi = when it comes to food. แซ่บsâep is Isan for spicy and delicious, and slang for hot, sassy, fierce (a tap shows its food meaning). ถนัดtà-nàt = to be good at, at home with: ถนัดมือขวาtà-nàt muue kwǎa = right-handed.

The culture behind it

MILLI (Danupha Khanatheerakul), the rapper of Phak Kon, released "สุดปังsùt bpang" on 14 August 2020 as her second single on YUPP!, and it passed 700,000 views in its first six hours (Workpoint Today). She got the idea from a viral clip of cheerleaders dancing in step to drums, and from school sports days (กีฬาสีgii-laa-sǐi, 'colour sports'), where older students cheer the younger ones on: hence the marching drums (THE STANDARD). The video plays out school dreams too: drum major, diva, beauty queen, cheerleader.

The point is in the languages. She raps in Central Thai, in Northern Thai, in Isan and in Southern Thai, adds Japanese and English, and uses ภาษาลูpaa-sǎa luu, a word game from kathoey slang that turns สวยsǔay into ลวยสุยluay-sǔi: whatever a woman's style or background, the song's release said, she has her own beauty if she is confident (Workpoint Today). MILLI told Coconuts that boys used to say they'd ask her out if her skin were lighter; her mother is from the South, and shares her darker skin. The full song has rough words, มึงmueng and กูguu, and an English 'bitch'; the lines here are clean.
