Whatever (ไม่ได้ก็ไม่เอา): meaning and key lines
PiXXiE feat. Zom Marie
What the song is about
ไม่ได้ก็ไม่เอาmâi dâi gâw mâi ao, “Whatever (If I Can't Have It, I Don't Want It)”, is a T-pop song by PiXXiE feat. Zom Marie (2022). A cool, slow T-pop song by the girl group PiXXiE with Zom Marie: she has had enough of someone who only wanted fun, and walks away. Spotify named it among the songs behind T-pop's growth abroad. The lyric video shows the Thai on screen, and almost every line is an A2 pattern you can use the same day: if I can't have it I don't want it, just friends, not any more, only just, not worth it at all, some day.

Key lines, explained

- เธอ toeเคย koeiบอก bàwkฉัน chǎnว่า wâaเธอ toeไม่ mâiอยาก yàakมี miiใคร krai
You once told me you didn't want anyone.
เคยkoei + verb = once did, have done: เคยบอกkoei bàwk = once told. บอกว่าbàwk wâa = to tell (someone) that. ไม่อยากมีใครmâi yàak mii krai = to not want anyone, meaning a partner: มีแฟนmii faen = to have a boyfriend or girlfriend, and มีใครmii krai says the same, more vaguely. - ถ้า tâaเห็น hěnเธอ toeกับ gàpใคร kraiเค้า káoก็ gâwแค่ kâeเพื่อน pûeanกัน gan
If I see you with someone, they're 'just a friend'.
She is quoting his excuses back at him. ถ้าtâa… ก็gâw… = if…, then…: ถ้าฝนตกก็ไม่ไปtâa fǒn dtòk gâw mâi bpai = if it rains, I'm not going. แค่kâe = only, just; เพื่อนกันpûean gan = friends (with each other), so แค่เพื่อนกันkâe pûean gan = just friends. เค้าkáo = he, she: the spelling of เขาkǎo as it's said. - ไม่ mâiได้ dâiก็ gâwไม่ mâiเอา aoแล้ว láewฉัน chǎnก็ gâwคง kongไม่ mâiรอ rawแล้ว láew
If I can't have you, then I don't want you; I guess I'm done waiting.
The title, a very Thai shrug: ไม่ได้ก็ไม่เอาmâi dâi gâw mâi ao = if I can't have it, then I don't want it. ได้dâi = to get; เอาao = to take, to want. ไม่mâi + verb + แล้วláew = not any more: ไม่รอแล้วmâi raw láew = I'm not waiting any more, ไม่เอาแล้วmâi ao láew = I don't want it any more. คงkong = probably, I guess. - แต่ dtàeพอ pawได้ dâiแล้ว láewก็ gâwเพิ่ง pôengจะ jàเข้าใจ kâo-jaiว่า wâaไม่ mâiคุ้ม kúmเลย loei
But once you had it, I only then saw it wasn't worth it at all.
The line before says she gave him her time because she thought he mattered. พอpaw + verb + แล้วláew = once (something has happened): พอได้แล้วpaw dâi láew = once (you) had it. เพิ่งจะpôeng jà + verb = only just, only then: เพิ่งจะเข้าใจpôeng jà kâo-jai = only then understood. คุ้มkúm = worth it, good value; ไม่คุ้มเลยmâi kúm loei = not worth it at all. You'll hear คุ้มไหมkúm mǎi (worth it?) at every market. - คน konไม่ mâiมี miiใจ jaiยังไงก็ yang-ngai gâwไป bpaiสักวัน sàk wan
Someone whose heart isn't in it will leave some day anyway.
มีใจmii jai = to care about someone, to have feelings for them (literally 'to have a heart'); คนไม่มีใจkon mâi mii jai = someone who doesn't really care. ยังไงก็yang-ngai gâw = anyway, whatever happens. สักวันsàk wan = one day, some day: สักวันฉันจะไปญี่ปุ่นsàk wan chǎn jà bpai yîi-bpùn = some day I'll go to Japan.
Words you'll learn
- แค่ kâe
only, just
- เพิ่ง pôeng
just (a moment ago), only just
It goes before the verb: เพิ่งมาถึงpôeng maa tǔeng (I've just arrived).
- คุ้ม kúm
worth it, good value
Thais use it all the time about prices: คุ้มมากkúm mâak is 'great value', ไม่คุ้มmâi kúm 'not worth it'.
- สักวัน sàk wan
one day, some day
- ไม่ได้ก็ไม่เอา mâi dâi gâw mâi ao
if I can't have it, I don't want it
The title: a shrug, 'whatever', when something isn't going your way.
- ยังไงก็ yang-ngai gâw
anyway, either way
Grammar in this song
ไม่mâi + verb + แล้วláew = not any more: ไม่รอแล้วmâi raw láew (I'm not waiting any more), ไม่หิวแล้วmâi hǐu láew (I'm not hungry any more). Without ไม่mâi, verb + แล้วláew means 'already, now': อิ่มแล้วìm láew (I'm full now).
ถ้าtâa… ก็gâw… = if…, then…; Thai often leaves out ถ้าtâa and keeps ก็gâw: ไม่ได้ก็ไม่เอาmâi dâi gâw mâi ao = (if) I can't have it, (then) I don't want it. คงkong + verb = probably, I guess: ฉันก็คงไม่รอแล้วchǎn gâw kong mâi raw láew (I guess I'm done waiting), เขาคงลืมkǎo kong luuem (he probably forgot). เพิ่งpôeng + verb = have just, only just: เพิ่งมาถึงpôeng maa tǔeng (I've just arrived).
The culture behind it
PiXXiE is a T-pop girl group of three, Mabel, Pimma and Ingko, on the label LIT Entertainment; their fans are called PiXXeL. "ไม่ได้ก็ไม่เอาmâi dâi gâw mâi ao" (Whatever), written and composed by MUKU, is on their first full album, BLOOM (September 2022), with the more established singer Zom Marie joining them for this slow, cool breakup song. In November 2023 Spotify named it, with Billkin's and Tilly Birds' hits, among the tracks behind T-pop's growth abroad.
The title is an everyday attitude in a phrase. Thais say ไม่ได้ก็ไม่เอาmâi dâi gâw mâi ao when they give up on something without making a fuss: if it can't be had, never mind. MUKU, one of LIT's managers, has said the song's working title was 'Cancel order': the idea came to her while queuing at a spicy-salad stall. The video is the official lyric video, so you can read every line as it's sung.
