The culture behind it
POLYCAT is a synth-pop band from Chiang Mai on the Bangkok label Smallroom, fronted by singer and songwriter Na, who wrote the words and music of "เวลาเธอยิ้มwee-laa toe yím". In October 2014 the band released three love songs at once as The Ordinary Love Story, a secret crush, being in love and a breakup, and made the videos from footage of the 1989 Thai romance Prik Khee Noo Kub Moo Ham, starring Janjira 'Took' Joojang and Kajornsak 'John' Rattananisai. The songs, collected on the album 80 Kisses (2016), brought the sound of the 1980s back into fashion, and GTH's teen series Hormones 3: The Final Season (2015) featured this one.
Its English title, You Had Me at Hello, quotes the film Jerry Maguire. By October 2026 the song had spent 413 weeks, about eight years, on Spotify Thailand's weekly chart, more than any other song in the chart's history.
