What the song is about

บ่งึดจักเม็ดbàw ngúet jàk-mét, “Bo Ngued Jak Met (I Couldn't Care Less)”, is a luk thung song by Taktaen Chonlada (2018). Dumped by a two-timing man, she tells him she couldn't care less: men like him are everywhere, and she's off to enjoy being single. A sassy Isan dance hit with more than 260 million views, it teaches the Isan words for doing, 'like this', 'to the full' and 'that's that', how to say never and anywhere, how to call someone unfaithful or insincere, and the title's Isan way of saying 'I don't care one bit'.

  1. น้อง náwngฮัก hákหลาย lǎaiจน jonสิ sìตาย dtaaiแทน taenได้ dâiบ่ bàwเคย koeiเฮ็ด hétให้ hâiเสียใจ sǐa-jaiบ่ bàwเคย koeiเฮ็ด hétให้ hâiเจ็บช้ำ jèp-chám

I loved you so much I'd have died for you; I never made you sad, never hurt you.

She calls herself น้องnáwng, the younger one. Isan ฮักhák = รักrák, to love, and หลายlǎai after a verb = very much (มากmâak). จนjon = so much that: เหนื่อยจนหลับnùeay jon làp = so tired I fell asleep. Isan สิsì = จะjà, will; ตายแทนได้dtaai taen dâi = could die in your place (แทนtaen = instead of). บ่เคยbàw koei = ไม่เคยmâi koei, never, and Isan เฮ็ดhét = ทำtam, to do: เฮ็ดให้เสียใจhét hâi sǐa-jai = to make someone sad. เจ็บช้ำjèp-chám = hurt, bruised inside. She sings the whole line in one breath.
  2. ใช้ชีวิต chái chii-wítโสด sòotให้ hâiมัน manคักคัก kák-kákโลดแหล่ว lôot làew

I'll live the single life to the full, and that's that!

ใช้ชีวิตchái chii-wít = to live (your life), literally 'to use life': ใช้ชีวิตให้คุ้มchái chii-wít hâi kúm = to make the most of life. โสดsòot = single, not in a relationship. ให้มันhâi man + adjective = so that it's really…: ให้มันสนุกhâi man sà-nùk = so it's real fun. Isan คักkák = properly, great, so คักคักkák-kák = to the full. Isan โลดlôot = เลยloei, right away, and แหล่วlàew is how Isan says แล้วláew, already: โลดแหล่วlôot làew = right away!, and that's that!
  3. ของ kǎwngจังซี้ jang-síiหา hǎaอยู่ yùuไส sǎiกะมี gà mii

Things like that, you'll find anywhere.

ของkǎwng = a thing: she calls a man like him a 'thing'. Isan จังซี้jang-síi = แบบนี้bàep níi, like this. หาhǎa = to look for; อยู่yùu = (to be) at; Isan ไสsǎi = ไหนnǎi, where; Isan กะgà = ก็gâw. A question word + ก็gâw means any-: หาที่ไหนก็มีhǎa tîi-nǎi gâw mii, look anywhere and there are some, means they're everywhere.
  4. กะแค่ gà kâeผู้ชาย pûu-chaaiชั่ว chûaซั่ว sûaหลายใจ lǎai-jaiแบบนี้ bàep níiโอ้ย ôoiบ่ bàwงึด ngúetจักเม็ด jàk-mét

The title line. Isan กะแค่gà kâe = ก็แค่gâw kâe, it's only, just. ชั่วchûa = bad, wicked, and she says it again the Isan way, ซั่วsûa, with s for ch. หลายใจlǎai-jai, 'many hearts', = unfaithful, two-timing. แบบนี้bàep níi = like this, and โอ้ยôoi = oh! Isan บ่bàw = not; งึดngúet = to be amazed, so บ่งึดbàw ngúet, not fazed, is Isan for 'I don't care'; and จักเม็ดjàk-mét, 'even one seed', = even a little. So บ่งึดจักเม็ดbàw ngúet jàk-mét = I couldn't care less, not one bit.
  5. คน konบ่ bàwจริงใจ jing-jaiมัน manเสียเวลา sǐa wee-laa

Someone who isn't sincere is a waste of time.

Isan บ่bàw = ไม่mâi: คนบ่จริงใจkon bàw jing-jai = someone insincere. จริงใจjing-jai = sincere, literally 'true heart'. เสียเวลาsǐa wee-laa = to waste time, a waste of time: เสียsǐa = to lose, and เวลาwee-laa = time. มันman, it, sums up what comes before: (that) is a waste of time. Grammar in this song

Never, and making someone feel. เคยkoei + verb = have ever…, used to: เคยไปไหมkoei bpai mǎi = have you ever been? ไม่เคยmâi koei, Isan บ่เคยbàw koei, = never. To make someone feel something: ทำให้tam-hâi (Isan เฮ็ดให้hét hâi) + feeling: ทำให้เสียใจtam-hâi sǐa-jai = to make someone sad.

Any-: question word + ก็gâw. ที่ไหนก็tîi-nǎi gâw = anywhere, อะไรก็à-rai gâw = anything, ใครก็krai gâw = anyone: หาที่ไหนก็มีhǎa tîi-nǎi gâw mii = you'll find them anywhere. In Isan, หาอยู่ไสกะมีhǎa yùu sǎi gà mii.

Isan → Central. ฮักhák = รักrák (love), เฮ็ดhét = ทำtam (do), สิsì = จะjà (will), บ่bàw = ไม่mâi (not), กะgà = ก็gâw (so, then), ไสsǎi = ไหนnǎi (where), จังซี้jang-síi = แบบนี้bàep níi (like this) and ซั่วsûa = ชั่วchûa (bad). The romanization reads Isan words as their spelling would sound in Central Thai; real Isan tones differ, so copy the singer.

The culture behind it

Taktaen Chonlada (ตั๊กแตนชลดาdták-gà-dtaen chon-lá-daa), born Chonlada Thongchunklang in 1983 in Phra Thong Kham district, Nakhon Ratchasima, started out as a sound-alike of the luk thung queen Pumpuang Duangjan in a radio station's singing contest, and sang for Grammy Gold from 2003 to 2019 (Thai Wikipedia). 'Bo Ngued Jak Met' came out in October 2018, words and music by Phanta Phana, a singer on the small label Taktaen produces; GMM Grammy explained its title in Central Thai as 'I don't care one bit'. Taktaen said she picked the video's team herself and sat in on directing and editing it, and the song gained about a million views a day, passing 30 million in its first month (GMM Grammy; TV Pool, December 2018).

The title. Isan dictionaries give งึดngúet as to be amazed or surprised (one also as Central ง้อngáw, to coax someone back), and บ่งึดbàw ngúet, not fazed, is how Isan says 'I don't care'; จักเม็ดjàk-mét is 'even one seed'. The Isan dictionary esan108 gives บ่งึดจักเม็ดbàw ngúet jàk-mét as 'don't care, not one bit'. The video ends with a short scene: she runs into her ex and his new girlfriend, thanks the girl for taking him off her hands, and walks off with her friends.
