- รู้สึก rúu-sùekดี diiทั้งที่ táng-tîiเป็น bpenแค่ kâeเพื่อน pûeanกัน gan
Feeling this good, even though we're only friends.
รู้สึกrúu-sùek = to feel (รู้สึกดีrúu-sùek dii = to feel good). ทั้งที่táng-tîi = even though. แค่kâe = only, just. เป็นเพื่อนกันbpen pûean gan = to be friends (with each other). - เล่น lênทัก tákมา maaหา hǎaฉัน chǎnเสมอ sà-mǒeแทบ tâepทุก túkคืนวัน kuuen-wan
You keep texting me, almost every day and night.
ทักták (literally 'to greet') = to message someone first, to slide into their chat: ทักมาták maa = text me. เล่นlên + verb = to keep doing something just for fun. เสมอsà-mǒe = always. แทบtâep = almost: แทบทุกวันtâep túk wan = almost every day. - ถ้า tâaเธอ toeให้ hâiฉัน chǎnเป็น bpenเพื่อนเล่น pûean-lênอย่า yàaเล่น lênเกิน goenกว่า gwàaนั้น nánได้ dâiไหม mǎi
If I'm just your friend for fun, could you not play beyond that?
ถ้าtâa = if. ให้hâi + someone + เป็นbpen X = to make someone your X. เพื่อนเล่นpûean-lên = a playmate, a friend you just have fun with. อย่าyàa + verb + ได้ไหมdâi mǎi = could you please not…? (a soft request). เกินกว่าgoen gwàa = more than, beyond. - ถ้า tâaฉัน chǎnเล่น lênเกิน goenเส้น sênไป bpaiเธอ toeรับ rápได้ dâiไหม mǎi
If I cross the line, can you handle it?
เกินเส้นgoen sên = over the line (เส้นsên = line). ไปbpai after a verb or adjective can mean 'too (much)': เกินไปgoen bpai = excessive. รับได้ráp dâi = can accept it, can handle it; รับไม่ได้ráp mâi dâi = can't accept it. - หยุด yùtเล่น lênเกิน goenเพื่อนเล่น pûean-lên
Stop playing more than a friend should.
หยุดyùt + verb = to stop doing. This line explains the title's pun: เพื่อนเล่นpûean-lên is a friend you have fun with, but เล่นเพื่อนlên pûean means to play with a friend's feelings, which is exactly what the singer wants to stop. - เพื่อน pûeanอะไร à-raiบอก bàwkฝันดี fǎn-diiก่อน gàwnนอน nawn
What kind of friend says 'sweet dreams' before bed?
Noun + อะไรà-rai = what kind of…?, often teasing or disbelieving: เพื่อนอะไรpûean à-rai = what kind of friend is that? ฝันดีfǎn-dii = sweet dreams, the classic goodnight text. ก่อนนอนgàwn nawn = before going to sleep. MILLI sings this part. - เพื่อน pûeanแบบไหน bàep-nǎiดม domหัว hǔaแล้ว láewบอก bàwkหอม hǎwm
What kind of friend sniffs your hair and says it smells nice?
แบบไหนbàep-nǎi = what kind, which type. ดมdom = to sniff on purpose. หัวhǔa = head. แล้วláew = and then. หอมhǎwm = fragrant; a sniff on the cheek or hair (หอมhǎwm, หอมแก้มhǎwm gâem) is the Thai kiss for family and sweethearts.

Grammar in this song
ถ้าtâa… (ก็gâw)… = if…: ถ้าฉันเล่นเกินเส้นไป เธอรับได้ไหมtâa chǎn lên goen sên bpai toe ráp dâi mǎi. อย่าyàa + verb + ได้ไหมdâi mǎi turns "don't" into a soft request, "could you please not…?". ทั้งที่táng-tîi = even though, and แค่kâe = only, just.
To ask "what kind of…?", put อะไรà-rai or แบบไหนbàep-nǎi after the noun: เพื่อนอะไรpûean à-rai, เพื่อนแบบไหนpûean bàep-nǎi; with the right tone this also teases. ไปbpai after an adjective or verb often means "too (much)": เกินไปgoen bpai, แพงไปpaeng bpai.
The culture behind it
Tilly Birds are a Bangkok pop-rock trio, Third (vocals), Billy (guitar) and Milo (drums), on GeneLab, a GMM Grammy label. "เพื่อนเล่น ไม่เล่นเพื่อนpûean-lên mâi lên pûean" (April 2021) was their first song about the friend zone and passed 100 million views in under five months. Rapper MILLI surprised fans by singing rather than rapping; her part, which she wrote herself, became a TikTok duet trend.
The title is a pun. เพื่อนเล่นpûean-lên is a playmate, a friend you just have fun with; เล่นเพื่อนlên pûean, the same two words reversed, means playing with a friend's feelings. The song is full of modern Thai dating rituals: someone who ทักták (messages you first) every night, the obligatory ฝันดีfǎn-dii before bed, and the หอมhǎwm, the Thai sniff-kiss on the cheek or hair. When a friend does all that, Thais say they are acting เกินเพื่อนgoen pûean, "more than a friend".
