How to use it

รัฐบาลrát-tà-baan is the government: the prime minister, นายกรัฐมนตรีnaa-yók-rát-tà-mon-dtrii, the cabinet and the ministries they run. Anything run by it belongs to รัฐrát, the state, and the people who work for it are ข้าราชการkâa-râat-chá-gaan, civil servants.

In everyday talk people often just say รัฐrát: a public hospital is a โรงพยาบาลรัฐroong-pá-yaa-baan rát. Thailand is a constitutional monarchy, so the King is head of state and the prime minister leads the government.
