Nothing but in Thai

“Nothing but” in Thai is อย่างเดียวyàang-diaw.

อย่างเดียว yàang-diaw

only, nothing but adverb

  • yàang low
  • diaw mid
  • Low: flat and lower than your normal voice, dropping a little at the end.

กินแต่ผักอย่างเดียวgin dtàe pàk yàang-diaw = to eat nothing but vegetables.

You'll hear it in Jai Pang (ใจพัง).

How to use it

อย่างเดียวyàang-diaw, "a single kind", comes after what it limits: this and nothing else, this alone. It often pairs with แต่dtàe, only, in front of the thing it limits. แค่kâe says "only" before a word, and เท่านั้นtâo-nán, after it, is the firmer "only" of signs and rules; formal Thai has ล้วนlúan, pure, nothing but. The same kind of thing is อย่างเดียวกันyàang-diaw gan.
