Stew in Thai

“Stew” in Thai is ตุ๋นdtǔn.

ตุ๋น dtǔn

to stew; stewed verb

  • dtǔn rising
  • Rising: start low, dip, then rise to the top, like a doubtful “Really?”

ต้มตุ๋นdtôm-dtǔn, 'to boil and stew', means to swindle.

You'll hear it in Kularb (กุหลาบ).

How to use it

ตุ๋นdtǔn, with a rising tone, is cooking slowly in liquid, the Chinese-Thai way: stewed beef for noodles, ก๋วยเตี๋ยวเนื้อตุ๋นgǔay-dtǐaw núea dtǔn, or chicken stewed with Chinese herbs, ไก่ตุ๋นgài dtǔn. Plain boiling is ต้มdtôm, and the two together, ต้มตุ๋นdtôm-dtǔn, "boil and stew", is slang for swindling someone.
