There in Thai

“There” in Thai is ที่นั่นtîi-nân; you'll also hear ตรงนั้นdtrong-nán (right there) and โน่นnôon (over there).

ที่นั่น tîi-nân

there, that place pronoun

  • tîi falling
  • nân falling
  • Falling: start high and drop clearly, like a firm “No!”

ตรงนั้น dtrong-nán

right there, that spot pronoun

  • dtrong mid
  • nán high
  • High: start high and go a little higher, a bit tense; don’t let it fall.

โน่น nôon

over there (further away) pronoun

  • nôon falling
  • Falling: start high and drop clearly, like a firm “No!”

How to use it

"There" works like "here" (ที่นี่tîi-nîi, ตรงนี้dtrong-níi): ที่นั่นtîi-nân is that place, ตรงนั้นdtrong-nán that exact spot. โน่นnôon points further away, and in speech you'll often hear it as นู่นnûun. "There is" or "there are" is a different word: มีmii, to have, as in มีปัญหาmii bpan-hǎa, there's a problem.
