Thai comparisons: more, the most and the same

Cheaper, the best, the same: three little words for every comparison.

Quick answer

To compare in Thai, put กว่าgwàa after the adjective: ถูกกว่าtùuk gwàa is cheaper, and เชียงใหม่เย็นกว่ากรุงเทพchiang-mài yen gwàa grung-têep is Chiang Mai is cooler than Bangkok. For the most, use ที่สุดtîi-sùt: ดีที่สุดdii tîi-sùt, the best. For the same, say เท่ากันtâo-gan (equal in amount) or เหมือนกันmǔean-gan (alike), and for not as … as, ไม่…เท่าmâi … tâo.

More, -er: กว่าgwàa

English adds -er or more. Thai puts กว่าgwàa after the adjective, and the thing you compare with straight after it: A + adjective + กว่าgwàa + B. There's no more in front.

When you're holding the thing, กว่านี้gwàa níi (than this) is all you need: มีใหญ่กว่านี้ไหมmii yài gwàa níi mǎi, do you have a bigger one?

Much more, a bit more

To say how big the difference is, add a word after กว่าgwàa: มากmâak or เยอะyóe for much, นิดหน่อยnít-nàwy for a bit.

How much cheaper?
ThaiEnglish

The most, -est: ที่สุดtîi-sùt

ที่สุดtîi-sùt after an adjective makes the most or -est: ถูกที่สุดtùuk tîi-sùt (the cheapest), ดีที่สุดdii tîi-sùt (the best). It works after verbs too: ชอบที่สุดchâwp tîi-sùt, like best. Ask with ไหนnǎi (which): อันไหนดีที่สุดan nǎi dii tîi-sùt, which one is the best?

The same, alike, not as … as

เท่ากันtâo-gan is equal in amount: ราคาเท่ากันraa-kaa tâo-gan, the same price. เหมือนกันmǔean-gan is alike, and ไม่เหมือนกันmâi mǔean-gan is different. เหมือนmǔean on its own is like: หน้าเหมือนแม่nâa mǔean mâe, she looks like her mum.

For not as … as, use ไม่mâi + adjective + เท่าtâo: เชียงใหม่ไม่ร้อนเท่ากรุงเทพchiang-mài mâi ráwn tâo grung-têep, Chiang Mai isn't as hot as Bangkok.

  • สอง sǎwngตัว dtuaนี้ níiราคา raa-kaaเท่ากัน tâo-gan
