How it works

Put กว่าgwàa after an adjective for 'more … than' and ที่สุดtîi-sùt for 'the most'; say 'the same' with เท่ากันtâo-gan and เหมือนmǔean.

1 Cheaper, bigger

English adds -er or more. Thai puts กว่าgwàa after the adjective: ถูกกว่าtùuk gwàa cheaper, ใหญ่กว่าyài gwàa bigger, สวยกว่าsǔay gwàa prettier. You already know one of these: ดีกว่าdii gwàa (better).

To say than what, put it right after กว่าgwàa: สีแดงสวยกว่าสีดำsǐi daeng sǔay gwàa sǐi dam the red is prettier than the black. When you're holding the thing, กว่านี้gwàa níi (than this one) is all you need.

  • ตัว dtuaนี้ níiถูก tùukกว่า gwàa

    This one's cheaper.

  • สี sǐiแดง daengสวย sǔayกว่า gwàaสี sǐiดำ dam

    The red is prettier than the black.

  • มี miiไซส์ sáiใหญ่ yàiกว่า gwàaนี้ níiไหม mǎiครับ kráp

    Do you have a bigger size than this?

    Men มีไซส์ใหญ่กว่านี้ไหมครับ Women มีไซส์ใหญ่กว่านี้ไหมคะ

2 The cheapest, the best

For the most or -est, put ที่สุดtîi-sùt after the adjective: ถูกที่สุดtùuk tîi-sùt the cheapest, ดีที่สุดdii tîi-sùt the best. It works after verbs too: ชอบที่สุดchâwp tîi-sùt like best.

Ask with ไหนnǎi (which): อันไหนดีที่สุดan nǎi dii tîi-sùt Which one is the best? สีไหนสวยกว่าsǐi nǎi sǔay gwàa Which colour is prettier?

  • ร้าน ráanนี้ níiถูก tùukที่สุด tîi-sùt

    This shop is the cheapest.

  • อัน anไหน nǎiดี diiที่สุด tîi-sùt

    Which one is the best?

  • ชอบ châwpสี sǐiเขียว kǐawที่สุด tîi-sùt

    I like green best.

3 The same, alike, too

เท่ากันtâo-gan means 'equal in amount': ราคาเท่ากันraa-kaa tâo-gan the same price, ใหญ่เท่ากันyài tâo-gan the same size.

เหมือนmǔean means 'like': เอาเหมือนอันนั้นao mǔean an nán I'll have one like that. เหมือนกันmǔean-gan means 'alike', so ไม่เหมือนกันmâi mǔean-gan is 'different'. At the end of a reply it means 'too': ชอบเหมือนกันchâwp mǔean-gan I like it too.

  • สอง sǎwngตัว dtuaนี้ níiราคา raa-kaaเท่ากัน tâo-gan

    These two are the same price.

  • ขอ kǎwเหมือน mǔeanโต๊ะ dtóนั้น nánครับ kráp

    I'll have the same as that table.

    Men ขอเหมือนโต๊ะนั้นครับ Women ขอเหมือนโต๊ะนั้นค่ะ

  • สอง sǎwngตัว dtuaนี้ níiไม่ mâiเหมือนกัน mǔean-gan

    These two aren't the same.

Tips

  • •Cheaper is ถูกกว่าtùuk gwàa; ถูกมากtùuk mâak means 'very cheap'.
  • •To like or want something more, add มากกว่าmâak gwàa: ชอบสีแดงมากกว่าchâwp sǐi daeng mâak gwàa I like red more.
  • •Answer a 'which one' question with the counting word: ตัวนี้ถูกกว่าdtua níi tùuk gwàa This one is cheaper.
  • •Shopping questions to go with it: ไซส์อะไรsái à-rai (what size?), มีสีอื่นไหมmii sǐi ùuen mǎi (other colours?) and ลดได้ไหมlót dâi mǎi (a discount?).
