Two consonants together: clusters
Read true clusters like kr, pl and kw, and the false ones where a letter is silent or changes.
How it works
Thai allows a few two-consonant clusters at the start of a syllable: a consonant plus รraw, ลlaw or วwaw, said together in one beat.
- with รraw: ครูkruu (teacher), ประเทศbprà-têet (country), พริกprík (chilli), ตรงdtrong (straight)
- with ลlaw: ปลาbplaa (fish), กลับglàp (go back), เพลงpleeng (song)
- with วwaw: ขวาkwǎa (right), ควายkwaai (buffalo), ความkwaam (makes nouns)
The first letter decides the tone
The class of the first consonant counts; the second one just joins in:
- ใกล้glâi (near): กgaw is mid class, plus ◌้mái-too, so falling
- ขวาkwǎa (right): ขkǎw is high class and the syllable is live, so rising
- ครับkráp: คkaw is low class and the syllable is dead and short, so high
Vowels wrap around the whole cluster, with a front vowel before the first letter: เปลี่ยนbplìan (change), ใครkrai (who). A tone mark sits on the second letter: กล้วยglûay (banana).
False clusters
Some pairs look like clusters but aren't:
- ทรtaw raw says s: ทรายsaai (sand), ทราบsâap (know, formal)
- after จjaw, ซsaw, สsǎw and ศsǎw, the รraw is silent: จริงjing (true), เสร็จsèt (finished), สร้างsâang (build)
Casual speech
Many Thais drop the r or l when they speak casually: ครับkráp becomes káp, ปลาbplaa becomes bpaa. You'll hear both versions. Read and say the full cluster; it always sounds right.
And remember that not every วwaw is part of a cluster: in ขวดkùat (bottle) it's the vowel ua.
Typical mistake: putting a vowel inside the cluster, "ka-ráp". Both consonants go into one quick beat.
