How it works

The last long vowels wrap around the consonant, so reading them is like a small puzzle: find the consonant, then collect the pieces before, above and after it.

New sounds

  • ◌ือuue: spread your lips as if smiling and say "oo": มือmuue (hand)
  • เ◌อoe: the vowel of British "fur" without the r: เจอjoe (meet)
  • เ◌ียia sounds "ee-uh": เรียนrian (study)
  • เ◌ือuea is the smiling "oo" sliding to a: เรือruea (boat)
  • ◌ัวua sounds "oo-uh": ตัวdtua (body)

The last three are diphthongs, and they're always long.

Vowels that change shape

When a final consonant follows, some vowels drop or swap a piece. This is the trickiest part of Thai spelling, so take it slowly:

  • ◌ือuue drops its อaw: ยืนyuuen (stand)
  • เ◌อoe swaps the อaw for ◌ิi: เดินdoen (walk), เงินngoen (money)
  • เ◌อoe before ยyaw drops the อaw: เลยloei, เนยnoei (butter)
  • ◌ัวua drops the ◌ัa and keeps the วwaw: บวกbùak (plus), มวยmuay (boxing)

So a วwaw sandwiched between two consonants is usually the vowel ua, not a w.

Glides

  • เ◌ียวiaw: เดียวdiaw (single, only one)
  • ◌วยuay: รวยruay (rich)

Tones: nothing new

The rules you know still work. Live syllables with mid- or low-class letters are mid: เมืองmueang (city), เรียนrian. Dead syllables with mid-class letters are low: เปิดbpòet (open), เปียกbpìak (wet).

Typical mistake: reading เปิดbpòet as "bpit". The ◌ิi here is part of the vowel oe, and the เee in front tells you so.
